Networking question

I've got two computers that I want to talk to each other. One in 98 the other XP.
Been told this is posible and what I need is network cards installed on each machine and a crosover cable to link them together.
Seem right?

you can buy usb network cables now for a reasonable price i think dse have them...

this might be easier if you have little experience in computers (no offence but this question kinda gives it away )

otherwise yes you are completely correct tho you may want to add the xp networking pack to the 98 computer from the xp disk if you stil lhave it (or run the networking wizard on the xp machine and then use a floppy disk to send the updates to the 98 machine- its pretty well explained in the wizard)

when you say talk to easch other what are you intending to do?

play games? share files? share internet?

A home offic enviroment.
Sync email. Share folders. Mabye share internet.
Usb sounds easy... much more expensive? any limitations?
would the 98 machine be usb 1 only?

yeap which means 11mbs so for your purposes it would be fine.

internet is .05 .128 .256 or 2mbit so youve got lots of room to spare.

i *think* the usb cables were $44 for 2 meters there was a 10 meter one but if you want to go further than that you might need a normal network.

alternatively usb wifi devices are cheapish now too have a look at dse and ascent.co.nz

dont like wifi devices, always been a bit iffy about security when it comes to wireless...yea either go the usb or the crossover network cable...if ya goin to be playin network games then usb is gonna be a bit slow, if its just for files and internet then sweet.
