OK so I've just landed a new job, in a .NET software house

I'm a Java/J2EE developer by experience

Now I want to get do a bit of learning prior to starting work, so some suggestions of useful How to's, framework overviews etc would be muchly appreciated

I've also discovered through my readings todate that to do ASP.NET stuff I need to be running XP Professional, I assume this is due to a reliance on IIS. Any suggestions as to a work arround to get ASP.NET running on XP Home? or am I going to need to upgrade to XP Pro?

Thanks in advance

You'll Probably need XP Pro, even though you're restricted to one site with IIS you can hang Virtual Dirs off it as different applications.

Bennor is currently working through MCAD/MCSD Self Paced Training kit ".NET core requirements" and I think he'll tell you its pretty sweet.

Yup. you need XP Pro.

.NET is good, you may have a little trouble adapting to J# (if that's what you're using) but overall it is quite a nice package considering who made it.

I'm tempted to get it myself, just to broaden my knowledge and perhaps to upskill for a future job.

thanks for the info guys

I belive that it's going to be a real grab bag of languages used, ASP.NET, C# and VB too, good thing I like a steep learning curve.

man you aint gonna get any sleep if you gotta learn all those pretty soon?

ya had a go usin those before?
[quote]
heheh, nah I don't have to know all that before I start.....

Thanks God....

I'm just looking to get a bit of understanding and knowledge before I start so that I can hit the ground walking.

heh i was just gonna say

I reckon C# is alot better that VB, i just tried one of the newer versions of VB the other day and i still find it crap to use Rolling Eyes
havent tried ASP.NET.....any good?

VB is basically only good for prototyping and knocking up small apps quickly. Not that useful for large scale systems.

...I'd just like to add: IMO.
[quote]
yea exactly, all i used to use it for was making small games like lander and space invaders Razz

C# is quite nice and fairly easy to use.

You shouldn't have too many worries adjusting from java at all. I picked it up in a week.

If you have the .NET Framework SDK Documentation you should be fine.

I say the same about linux.

What's linux got anything to do with it? We are discussing languages here aren't we?

I use C on a large variety of platforms. Can't do that with VB.

What's up with making some lame linux comment everytime I say something in here? I think you have mistaken me for some kind of linux worshiper. I don't worship software or tech companies ...go back to your Vodafone and MS arse licking Razz

well that worked well Smile Razz

Yeah i find vb.net a big improvemt over previoous versions.
Not to sure if this is correct but i dont think vb.net supports OO programming like C# does
[quote]
Yeah, from what I see it's not full blown OO, but there are classes etc there.
