Looking to get a new speaker setup here are my conditions:

-Active speakers
-Not too expensive
-Loud enough to use at a small venue (house party)
-xlr inputs.

dont really have too much money to spend so budget ideas would be good without getting into bad quality speakers.

I got a mean pair of 15" 400W Wharfedale EVPs from Music Planet for $1650. Grunty as fuck and im pretty sure you cant blow these up due to the speaker protection circuit. They have a built in EQ on the back too which is cool for house parties where you don't have a separate sub. So depending on what you think is not "too expensive" they certainly cover all your other bases and I reckon they sound miles better than some of the complete shit i listed to when shopping. EZSmile

yer I dont have money for that.

maybe something like this

I dont know is it needed to have a pair? im really strapped for cash as my car blew last week aswell and ive just had to buy a new car.

Go to the rockshop.
Behringer have a good cheap range of active gear thats upgradable.

sweet will do.

Would buying 1 good speaker then in future buying another 1 of the same model be a decent option?

yep this is fine if it can suit your requirements.
Have a squiz around online to see if you can find anything cheaper in the Behringer range.
The only reason Im suggesting Behringer, is because they are good quality for the price (entry level), you can choose to only get one if you want, and you can chuck a sub on when your ready to buy.
There are tons and tons of better brands but the prices seem to jump really quickly.
Same with DB Technologies.

I just had a looksie and they unfortunatly dont have any at the moment.

Cheap yes, good? Not so much Razz

They would work as a stop gap measure though, ie theyll do the trick til you can afford something better Smile

You can, but not really. Remember speakers deteriorate so if you do buy a second one down the track there will be a difference in sound quality between the two. You'd be better off buying a couple of el cheapos now (I'd even consider 2nd hand if price is that much of an issue) and upgrading later.
[quote]
Actually second hand is a really good option here.
As for speaker deterioration, yep your right CT, but really the ave joe wont be able to tell, unless they are proper fucked (the speakers not the people)

cheers guys this weekend ill go check out the rockshop, have had a look on trademe and just missed out these behringer truths, now cant find any more apart from skytec which look abit too budget.

can anyone help us out with a 2nd hand set.

Laughing

True enough. Isn't really that hard to proper fuck speakers if you don't know what you're doing though either.

2nd hand FTW then. Try the classifieds forum and the trade & exchange (if that still exists) Smile
[quote]
man rockshop dont stock those behringers ones anymore and all their other ones are like over 1500.They suggested goin some where else and getting those cheap skytec ones, dont know how keen I am on them.

Im contemplating just getting some active monitors then maybe getting some pa speakers later, monitors would suit more jamming in my bedroom and editing mixes on the comp right?

no luck on trademe wit the pa's yet either

Yep Smile
[quote]
sweet any reccomendations or ones on trademe you guys know of.
[quote]
If youre going to spend that much you may as well chop out a little extra and get something really decent.

Don't know about NZ (I'm in Oz), but those prices are only a little cheaper than a pair of KRK Rokkit 8's or Yamaha HS80s which are vastly superior (monitors) Smile
[quote]
hmm i really cant spend much more.

and these are the only ones I can find on trademe that dont look super budget. Anyone else have a quick squiz for us. or got some nice sites in nz that have good prices.
[quote]
thanks alot! first one is out of my zone I live in auckland

2nd ones arnt active, really wana stick to active.

3rd looks good, but would be hard finding the same speaker for same price? really need 2 i think

4th to expensive for just 1.

thanks heaps dude for your time. If geting 2 pa active speakers is gona be to hard, got some reccomendations for active monitors ( a pair)

Yep Yamaha's are the go I reckon.
I gots me some msp's and they got a future music best buy award!!
Flat as fuck, super accurate, with nice sturdy construction, however if your going to be monitoring productions then put them on some isolation foam of some sort. I got some funny results until I discovered this.

Ive got the next size up, but you would be sweet with these.

As for your gig man, get your hands on any hi-fi you can and practice practise practise!

[quote]
Actually yeah, Edwards do some really good deals, for sale and hireage. I used to use them for every gig where I had to supply the system. (stupid 21st and afterball parties...."Do you have any ATB?"...or "Can you play some dance music!?!??!?!"Wink

Quit doin private parties. (unless its me mates)

From personal experience KRK Rokits are amazing. The 8"s are loud enough for party/large room.

This looks interesting
