Umm, maybe you should STOP SLASHING FUNDING?

If there's a shortfall of 50mn, give them another 50mn.

So sick of this constant striving for efficiency. Effectiveness is what matters - delivering outputs.

There is NO fat left to cut, and the 1990s showed that (defence funding as a % of GDP plummetted under national, even during years of economic growth)

Rod Deane - understanding of defence: 0

9 years of mismanagement? Labour steered the ship VERY well.

Bob, we have the money, we just need to reallocate it.

I was being sarcastic Vads - we know Labour helped build up our defence forces again... and whilst naional say one thing all they got is budget cuts to offer

No doubt he will come down hard on this sort of thing and that ain't bad:

The New Zealand Defence Force bought $590,000 worth of bullets for the army's Steyr rifles, despite the manufacturer warning they were useless.

Funny how that story suddenly appeared the very day after National appoints one of their favourite zombie razor men to slash defence spending. I mean, it couldn't be a coincidence, a planted story for a willingly credulous media beat up of a non story (given the ammo was only meant for training and they've got most of their money back)... Now could it?

I wonder how many soldiers - who did well in pay, equipment and infrastructure under Labour - are now liking that change they voted for back in November '08?

Of course we all know Night Rider believes everything Leighton Smith tells him.

You are missing the point. A planted press release designed to make the NZDF look wasteful coming out within 24 hours of a notorious slasher and burner being put in charge of a spending "review" to my mind clearly signals the government intends to take axe to defence spending.

It is of course part of a wider PR offensive from this government ahead of what will probably be catastrophic cuts in a black budget from the dismal Bill English, in which the mistake of the 1990's National government will be repeated.

Let's be honest - National's numbers on tax cuts don't add up. They simply cannot give the sort of tax cuts their rich mates want without a deficit blow out. At the very start of a fragile recovery, the ultra dry and orthodox English is therefore clearly going to slash and/or cap all government spending and transfer wealth via a tax cut from middle and low income Kiwis to the richest New Zealanders in another attempt at the long discredited trickle down. We all know that history tells us tax cuts will be pocketed by business by way of increased profits and dividends to largely offshore owners. Slashing government spending, along with interest rate hikes, will kill off the nascent recovery before it really even starts and we will flounder back into a W shaped recession just as Australia and the rest of the world shake off the current recession and start growing again.

It is a repeat of the failed policies of the nineties, by the same people who brought us the income gap with Australia in the first place. You can forgive them a mistake first time round. Second time and they should be put on trial.

I'm not backing national but I am similarly disillusioned with some of the crap being spouted on the left side too.

Not a fan of petty point scoring.
[quote]
but lets not let the point scoring get in the way of the issue at hand Bob

that is the party that as part of the election campaign promised more support to the defence force (whilst rubbishing labours efforts) are about to do the complete opposite
[quote]
Like I said I'm not supporting national on this so I'm not sure what you want me to discuss?
[quote]
your disillusion with the left perhaps - actually I don't want you to discuss anything, I was merely commenting on your post
