Looking at upgrading my storage and with the impending PS3 purchase and the fact that there are now 4 computers in the home, looking at getting something that can plug in to the router to act as server. As pretty much everything in PC have eliminated the Apple Time Capsule and looking at the Netgear Stora 1TB or the WD World Book II 2TB. Liking the ability to have 2 drives with RAID backup or expand storage with the 2nd drive in the Stora but thinking the extra TB of the WD is a good thing. Anyone have any experience with either device they wish to share?

I just bought a Netgear ReadyNas, reasonably happy with it and its far better than anything else I've seen in its price range.

I put two 1tb drives in it and you can upgrade just by pulling one out and putting a new larger one in, it will sort it out without having to do anything.

I've got a pleiades network drive and so far no bad but can be a pig to set up. Has 1.5 tb in it and can attach second drive via usb to it. Only usb2 though so very slow to back up.

Eliminate the Time Capsule because it doesn't really function as NAS, not because you all use PC's. PC's can talk to them just fine. It's almost exclusively for backup purposes tho. Nice bit of hardware tho, we rock one at home.

For people with budget, I'd be looking at something like this:

But yeah, $800 bux.

I can't really advise on any cheaper options tho, as just about everyone I know who's gone through a few NAS has ended up with something from http://www.synology.com and they are about as expensive as the home server type option.

Thats not a bad price for a home server if it includes 2TB... though youll halve that for the raid1 equivalent...

Here is the ReadyNas, I would be considering the Acer

http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=373638 $400 + you can get
1TB drives for ~$139 each
2TB Drives for ~$230 each

Still adds up to a fair bit.

If you have a spare computer wack OpenSolaris on that, buy some drives and you'll have NAS and a new job in IT in no time.

Just grabbed 2 x 2tb drives the other day for under $400 the pair, inc GST. So sick.
