I just saw that one of the arrested accused in this liquor shop murder case asked for name suppression - using a very common reason that he'd not had time to inform his family.

Why, in these cases, does the judge not go: Oh dear... OK, here is my phone. Call them now so we can continue?

Pwnd!

It will be suppression that lasts for 24-48 hours, surely you can handle waiting to find out who they are for that long?

Hmmm ... is the phone idea really that bad though? I'm all for speeding up due process.

the phone idea would be great if we didn't believe in the concept of innocent until proven guilty

but alas we are a civilised lot, well outside of the baying mob

it's not a matter of proving innocence or guilt though bob

just the public's right to know

ture that NR

however a slight delay as BG says in letting the public know whom the alleged isn't that big a deal in most instances (there are of course exceptions)

does slow down the trial by media action - that alone is a good thing

the phone idea is stupid.

1) i would think that MOST family members of persons charged with crimes would prefer to find out about it in person rather than over the phone
2) you will most likely not shorten the 'waiting' time at all given that some family members may not be available at the time the phone calls is made
2) the court system is already stretched to the max, it should not have to provide a facility for offenders to inform their families that they have been charged with offences over the phone - just in cell phone costs the bill would be considerable.

The idea is stupid in principle, would involve commitment of resources yet would achieve nothing other than satisfying the curiosity of people who have nothing better to do slightly earlier than would otherwise be the case.

Don't they get a free phone call when they are getting arrested? Surely this would be the apt time to get the message to your family…

Yea but if you are not convicted yet - isn't it a bit mean to publish people's names until they are?

Just in case.....they didn't do it?

Name suppression seems to only apply to mothers that kill their kids and cops that go to court for bashing people.

I don't see the importance of knowing who did it asap, as long as they're under police custody and can't hurt anybody else... I can wait a couple of days to find out who it was.

Yeah but on the flip side, it’s a free country and if I saw X happen, then I should be able to say ‘I saw X happen’ to whoever the hell I like.

What RIGHT do they have for name surpression though....NONE
