is an mx-5 a 'girls car' or not?




me, i say hell fuck no.

-reasonably priced
-light
-rear wheel drive
-handles like a dream
-unlimited headroom
-great fuel economy
-been around long enough to have a whole heap of power mods available, from basic NA mods, to bolt on turbo/supercharger kits, to fucking v8 swaps. (yeah i know there is the rotary option, but quite frankly, fuck that )


imo, anyone who thinks an mx-5 is a car for pussies, doesn't have a clue about cars.

if you don't like the styling - look more carefully - there is a few very subtle e-type jag cues in it (1st and 2nd gen)

the e-type being one of THE hottest roadsters in history you'll recall.

amongst a sea of front drive shitters and other ordinary, boring pap, they're great cars. for all the reasons kris pointed out.
a few tastefull mods should take that "girlish" edge off i reckon

They are a well made car, however they have a sissy chicks car stigma attached, thats just the way it is unfortunately.

Girls car unless ya put a rotary in it, fuck putting a V8 in it, all it'll do it smoke the tyres and not handle anywhere near as good, the point is to get the engine low and as far back as possible

13b turbo or 13b PP, even a 12A bridgey would do it..

actually the fire wall might need a bit of a move, i really dont know, dont think its been tried, anything can fit with modification but a 20B is a bit overkill, make a good drag car though

why not the bridgey?? tiny, piece of piss to work on and reso reliable for a rotor! granted your not gonna get big power but how much do you need in a car that weighs fuk all?

I just don't think the bridgey sound suits the mx-5 but there is no real reason. Yeah a 20B would be over kill and you would need massive breaks.

yeah i see your point, would be kind of cool to see one go by pulsing hard though, but i wouldn't personally do it, rather have an RX3 with a 13B-PP and put the turbo in the MX5

Blade what do you think the latest rotary engine in the rx-8 would cost second hand? $5,000 to $10,000? That could be an option if you have the money. Give it a mild port or turbo.

I think the MX5 is a great car overall. Handling is amazing, nice and light, good performance and you can pick them up cheap now.

Still doesn't change the fact that it's a girls/hair dressers car though

id definately use the renesis rotors, there lighter anything light is ur friend especially if it the rotors

I put a 5.7kg light chromoly flywheel on my skyline, the standard it around 12kg, it makes all the difference!!!

It looks like a girls car and that is all that matters.

Not at all, like the MX-5 its all a stigma thing. There is only one ferrari i would ever consider buying if i had the money, the 575M. All the rest i think they are too in your face, i would prefer a DB9 Vanquish / M3CSL / even a R34 GTR (Nur spec?). Ferrari along with most other manufacturers make some really great cars, however they all have a set of models that are what i like to call the cash cow model. This is the car that someone with alot of money buys but has no imagination when it comes to their choice of car. I always look at it in this light, if i had that amount of money to spend on a car would i buy that?
