mitsi legnums

im looking at buying a wagon, and these appeal asthetically. Been told theyre not that reliable by a couple of mates, but thats just what theyve heard, id be looking at 97 to 99 model. Anyone got the inside knowledge?

I have a 97 ST-GDI 1800 Manual, non turbo.. reliable as eh!! I got 850kms out of one fill this week.. on average about 750km/fill.

Only problems I've had...

Aircon pump blew.. no biggie to replace, about 180 for a recon unit
One of the metal gear linkage arms snapped (dunno the proper name for them sorry), but I'm guessing the previous owner was a bit of a thrasher.

Good on tyres (depends more on the tires than anything though )
They sit on the road bloody nicely, not too firm not too soft... just right.

Parts for them are a dime a dozen from what I'm told.

I've done well over 100,000kms in mine over the last 2 years and I still enjoy driving it.

The cams are a bit noisy when idling though... there is stuff you get from Repco etc. which quietens it.

I know the Autos on the VR4s can be a bit fragile and expensive to replace.... As any big luxo '90s jap wagon it'll be semi-expensive to run and fix at times and it's not going to be uber-economical round town as it's heavy but probably average on the highway... no particular reason NOT to get one... not the cheapest car to run out there but compared to others in its class it's on par

1999 VR4 Legnum (have seen on sale for around $19,000 probably around $17,000 now maybe less maybe more for a manual though i dont think they are hard to find) 2.5litre V6 twin turbo 4wd Heavy as fuk, gonna suck gas like a $2 whore, part from that there cool for a wagon and i've seen a couple of quick ones.. having said that I'd rather just import a Autech 260RS

I've observed something about Legnums.

Only people i dislike drive them.

I know 3 people with them, immensely dislike (infact hate) all 3 of them. They are 3 of the 4 people in this world i HATE.

Hmm I seriously don't recomend buying one,

I have a tiptronic STR ..and 18 months ago the tranmission went then blowing the rear diff / spiderpin the works the only thing in the assembly that was okay was the front linkage all up cost around $1500.00 I think, and I don't thrash it .

Anyways at the mo. my Trans has just shite itself again this time requiring complete overhaul spider pin went again as did the rear diff assembly - cost $2000 + gst .

Not under warranty fuckn ouch , So I go to pick it up and guess what the only cars in this place are all Legnum wagons like 8-10 off them ...

If you're getting a Mitsi get a basic one. No V6 rubbish or tip tronic or any of that stuff. They be very reliable but the autos are weak and the electronics tend to cause issues. I'm not sure if they have got any better but the GDI models were lemons, on ly about half went smoothly off the back of the transporter when I was in compliance. Looked at a Caldina yet? Just avoid a 4WD one unless you're after the GT-T which are getting relatively cheap now.

i got told by my mechanic that the diff's blow very easily. If you are trying to do 4 wheel burnouts that is.........

my work mate had a legnum VR4 tiptronic and man that thing could move ...then mitsi did the call back of all auto and tiptronic models cos of the electrics in the brakes were faulty so he sold it cheap as fuck to his brother in law who fixed it and he hasnt had one ounce of trouble with it since ......

If anyone wants i have got a really good condition set of 19inch advanti zatrix chrome's which came off an str or vr4 legnum.

I looked at a legnum before getting my Caldina G Spec 4wd.

No problems with it so far after 1 year and 40k, 4wd might not be as economical as the 2wd but it does feel a lot more secure on the road.

I loved the look of the legnum but at the end of the day commonsense prevailed and I bought the Toyota, and I haven't looked back since.

WEALTH of knowledge about legnums.

avoid GDI's lol ... not made for our fuels...emission systems are bound to break down, causing the car to fail.

legnums in general (v6s) are expensive to work on, ie. labour intensive but otherwise their a mint car.
