Read on below a short history of the Mint & Largered series & what you can also look forward to from the Showdown Productions stable later on this year.

Grant Kearney aka Sample Gee. You may recognise him as the name behind NZ’s most successful ever dance compilation series “Lagered”, but he’s also the brains behind some of NZ’s other biggest dance albums. Mint is one of them.

The first Mint album was released in both Australia and New Zealand in 2001 and quickly became the biggest selling house compilation of the year in both countries. A combination of flashy artwork, great branding and a superb collection of all the biggest house tracks of the year guaranteed Grant instantly had another hit on his hands. Mint 2 followed in 2002 and sold equally as well, then came Mint 3 in 2003 and Mint 4 last year. The series has already sold more than 120,000 copies in Australasia.

The innaugral Mint club night to launch Mint 2 was held in 2003 at Float in Auckland and drew more than 1000 people. In 2004 Mint found a new home at Aucklands hottest new club, Morrisson on Fort Street. Now into it’s second year, Mint the club night has been sold out every month and has now become New Zealand’s biggest monthly house event.

So Mint 5 is soon to be released in NZ, tell us about it?

It follows the same style of the previous four albums. The name Mint is synonymous with essential house music, so only the best and biggest tracks make it onto the album. Mint 4 was the first of the albums that I actually mixed and I’ll be mixing the new album as well.

How did you come up with the name?

Adam Morris (Adam Bomb) who I worked with at Universal used to say it all the time. I was actually going to call the album Jus’ Right but when I showed the tracklist to Adam he said “that’s mint”….and so it was!!

Have you always been a house music fan?

I’ve been buying and playing it since house music first started in the late 80’s. I’m mostly known as a trance DJ but I have a massive collection of house records and I love to play it. House creates a different vibe in a club to trance. Not better, just different. I had such a great time playing at the first Mint event at Float and the albums have been so successful, it seemed logical to make it a monthly event in Auckland. It’s now been running for a year at Morrisson and has been sold out every month. It’s now the biggest monthly house night in NZ. I hate to be pigeon holed with musical styles so it’s great to have the freedom to go out and be booked to play both house and trance.

What have you got coming up in the next couple of months?

I’m busy promoting my monthly club nights in Auckland… RNB Superclub and Mint. I’m about to start a new radio show on George FM on Friday nights from 8-10pm, called “The Weekend Warm Up”. I’m solidly booked with DJ work four months in advance and I’m playing regular spots in Auckland at Spy Bar and Auckland’s newest club Starz. Also really busy with putting together the new Mint and Lagered albums.

What's happening with Lagered this year?

I’m releasing a new album called “One for the Road” later this year and will be doing a national tour upon it’s release.

Dont forget the 28th of May Hamilton, Mint will be the best night yet @ Liquid so be in early on the night as we have advertised the hell out of the event in Auckland to encourage a big group of punters down to experience Mint Hamilton style, it would be horrible if we ended up with more more Aucklander's in the bar than locals. Shocked

Also another announcement; local dj & scratch legend Rick Rush has been added to the night playing B2B with myself (Grover) prior to Sample Gee, we will put on a nice super funky set mixed in with some mean ass scratching to warm you up before Gee takes over @ midnight.

See you nice & early Saturday 28th. Music

$5 entry with first 50 people recieving a free shot/beer or wine on arrival.
