what about this kid who's getting $150 million US for playing basketball?

Does this seem a little bit stupid?

They guy is good but that amount of money?

A tiny bit of that cash could effectively end starvation in ethepoia.

The world is truly a fucked place with warped senses of responsibilty.

Especially when Nike run sweatshops paying their workings literally cents to make their shoes.

Doesn't seem quite right.

(and yes, I have a pair of Nikes)

Better two cents than no cent...

If he wasn't worth that much, they wouldn't pay him that much.

What's Etheopia?

Rolling Eyes

If you have a pair of nikes you should quit complaining as you are part of the problem, not part of the solution. There is no use complaining against comething you have helped bring about.

btw, the guy (Le Bron James) is really good, one of the best high school players ever and about to be first draft pick into the NBA.
[quote]
And he's only 18! He must be pretty good...
[quote]
Le Bron James was drafted 1st overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA draft yesterday.

his SHOE contract with NIKE was worth US$90 mil , BEFORE he was even a pro player !

Sean Elliot, a ex NBA star who scouts college (high school) kids says he is the best there is, although this means nothing when he gets to the NBA !
his new coach @ cleveland has high expectations of James but doesnt want to push him to early....

Kobe Bryant was another player that went straight from high school and they are saying hes as good, if not better than he was !

Michael Jordans 1st SHOE contract was worth $2mil US in '82
(I think thats the year)

I'll be keeping a close eye on Le Bron James in the future....
[quote]
Kobe was something like the 7th pick and Le Bron the first so you would assume hes better at the same age.

Ironic that he got banned for a couple of games last year for being given $400 worth of shirts which isn't allowed as a high school player.

c'mon man, I was saying I owned some Nike shoes, you dork.

I am questioning the reason for having them.

Not trying to be self righteous.

Can people post a reply about this in context rather than wanking on about the NBA and shit?
[quote]
Its ridiculous. He's being paid so much because he will sell heaps of shoes for nike. He's no Michael Jordan yet and hasn't even played an nba game.
[quote]
whos wanking on about the NBA ?in context of what ? I think the NBA is pretty damn relevant considering he's just become an NBA player.....

if you only want to talk about the amount of $$$$ he's getting sweet.

its HEAPS!

stylin, no one picked in the draft has played pro b ball yet.
[quote]
TC - you seemed to have a problem with the amount Nike pays its workers, hence my comment. I do think the amount of money is ridiculous, but no more so than anyone paid that sort of money, whatever the reason. Excessive wealth is ludicrous while people are starving.
[quote]
I guess that's what I am saying.

Same thing goes for cocoa factories on the Ivory Coast who basically employ child slave labour to make cocoa for chocolate companies like Nestle and Hersheys.

Meanwhile the CEOs of these companies take home $30 million....

These are the sort of CEOs who support war in Iraq and crazy policies that make the rich richer and the poor poorer.

Free trade - capitalism = greed.

Billions for a few.
Pennies for the poor.
[quote]
How does getting paid to make cocoa make these poor people poorer.

Surely they don't pay them in negative dollars??
[quote]
it's your sort of attitute trapper that is the cause of poverty.

"they are getting paid, at least the have a job - dirty Africans"

The big companies think they are doing a favour by giving these guys work.

The big favour would be to pay them properly and give them the same human rights that you and I enjoy.
[quote]
ahhh Tony the closet racist... how nice

I didn’t realise Nike and Nestle were international humanitarian aid agencies, I thought they made shoes and chocolate...

Maybe instead of berating these companies for not giving these people ‘enough money’ or campaiging for their human rights you should remember they are giving them a hell of a lot more than you ever will.

Why don't you give them some fricken money? You selfish prick!
[quote]
btw: you didn't answer my question yet, how does giving these people money make them poorer?
[quote]
Tony, I think you're missing the point that you're missing the point -- two cents is better than no cent at all.

Also, the fact that they get get paid less is to be expected -- demand for labour flows to the market with the lowest relative cost -- its a fundamental concept in microeconomics!

no no - that is our problem in the world.

Two cents - these CHILDREN work 16 hours a day, 7 days a week for a pittance - SLAVE LABOUR.

No wonder 'they' hate the west so much.

The big western companies go in, set up business, pay fuck all and then make mega bucks of these kids.
It's called taking advantage, not giving the unfortunate an opportunity.

That is not something I want anything to do with thanks.
[quote]
Yes Nuvolai thats all correct

However it doesn't make it right!

Exploiting the situation of people in poor and devloping nations by giving them low paid and unskilled work doesn't help those people in the long term

These workers get paid bugger all at the expense of those in the developed countries who traditionally worked in factories making shoes etc. Obviously cheaper labour allows for greater margins and thus profits but at what cost?

Exploitation is not good economics, in my view. At some point we have to respect people for what they are, human beings with the same right to life as ourselves and the same rights to quality of life.

Your attitude about it being good that they have any work at all is plain crass! As is the amount of money this very talented basketball player will soon be earning. You will no doubt go far in this world
[quote]
the worlds a screwed up place no matter what gets said in a current affairs forum so why waste so much time talking about shit that we have no control over ?

this thread was about a basketball player that got a shoe contract worth US $90 mil now its a political debate about child labour and crap like that....

Because its way more interesting and ultimately rewarding than posting about ya latest wank fantesy in the lounge

Free your mind and your ass will follow Smile
[quote]
Richy - it was never intended to be a sport thread.

I was trying to say that an obscene amount of money is being paid to a kid for something he hasn't done yet when a fraction of that money could help a lot of people in the world.

I ma not saying companies should have to give their profits to the poor.

I am saying I think we need to look at our proirities in the world.

What to we value more?

On basketball playing or the lives and wellbeing of starving children?
[quote]
Confused
dude, Im hoping you have me confused with someone else, Ive only been in the lounge a couple of times ever.......

but yes, current affairs is better to talk about than your latest wank fantasy !!

I guess the point Im trying to make is that some people here (CA) take things WAYYYYY to seriously and no amount of bitching will change that.
[quote]
your dead right Tony, its good that you care too.

theres too much $$$$$$ in all the wrong places.
[quote]
Richy it was a joke Smile And not aimed specifically at you or anyone in the lounge, more a reflection on the silliness oif that world compared to the grown up trousers of CA

end of day - its all text and when Trapper losses it he'll no doubt blow the server Cool taking us all with him (no offence intended Trapper)

LOL

[quote]
Richy I realise that but how can he be worth more than what a number of top nba players are getting when he hasn't proven himself? I would say its a big pr campaign.
[quote]
Richy you must have your hand on it 24/7 as you love to talk about wanking and wank fantasys. If that's going to be your contributuion limit yourself to posting in the lounge. Cool
[quote]
Stylin, read bob daktari's last post, Im assuming your taking the piss like he was.

fuck knows why he's getting sooooo much, its crazy !
[quote]
btw, how come there was a 5 minute gap between your posts directed at me ? did it take that long to come up with a smart ass comment ?

Bob Daktari signs to Te Puke Young Farmers Basketball Team

After 12 years of not playing competitive basketball Bob Daktari comes out of retirement to return to his old team at Te Puke

Club Captain Bruce informs us that the club is very excited to have Bob back in the fold

"he was always good at the after game functions"

Rumours abound in the Kiwifruit capital on the compensation package Mr Daktari will earn whilst at the club, a un-named club spokesperson would neither confim nor deny the rumour that it involved a goat and three slices of cheese

ends

NEWSFLASH

Bob Daktari's admission to the team is now in doubt after it was discovered the contract required Bob to sign up for the Young Nationals if he was to play for the Young Farmers.

The most likey replacement for Bob is Me, because I am already a Young Nationals member.

end.
[quote]
cancel that

I have just joined the Act party

I now OWN the Te Puke Young Farmers team and have traded them to the Warriors franchise for a cool 6.7 million

Not a bad mornings work really, especially when considering I get to keep the goat and cheese.
