"Microsoft says to start selling portable music players for about 80% less than Apple's iPod.

The Microsoft-branded devices will "look and feel" as good as the iPod for as little as $50, said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of MSN at Microsoft Corp., at the Goldman Sachs fifth annual Internet Conference in Las Vegas.
See full quote at Denver Post.

Microsoft iPod killers are supposed to hit the market later this year along-side a MSN Music Download Store, which goes up against iTunes.

On SeattlePI another quote of Mehdi, where he states that the iPod is only in 4% of US households today.

So Micrsoft's two major new targets are Apple in the music download business and Google in the Search Engine arena. "

time will tell I guess, be cool if what they are boasting is true tho....

WMV is meant to be better than mp3 for the same file size, i've read.

in a recent quality shootout linked slashdot, wma came second to last with sony atrack in last place. Aac came third place after ogg and some other format. Ive looked for the link but cant find it, will have a bigger google when i get a chance.

Actually you're right, I was getting wma and wmv mixed up.

sure you can encode files at 320kbit but when comparisons are made you would compare a similar sized file no?

Slashdot: For all your whinging about Microsoft needs.

If they bring out an iPod killer for $50, i'll own one and i'll buy music off their website. Simple.

I rip all my CDs to 192k WMV at the moment and its sweet, certainly not an audible difference between that and MP3 on a home or office stereo system.

Here's the exact quote:

'Number one, our strategy is certainly to offer a multitude of devices. I think the iPod's a great product, but there's a lot of opportunities. They're only in four percent of US homes today, even with all the success they've had. There are a number of other great devices that are coming out. I personally have spent time with a bunch of hardware manufacturers who will launch hardware products when we ship our service(Windows Media-based online music store) that will look and feel as good as the iPod product. And they will undoubtedly be a little bit less expensive. Head-to-head against Apple, we'll have a device that will be available to the consumer. We won't produce it, but it will be available to the consumer...And then we'll have a bunch of other devices in between. Little ones that cost $50 bucks that you go running with. So, the proposition is that you can buy a number of different devices with the MSN Music service as opposed to just a single device from Apple.'

Everytime Mircrosoft get in on something they cheapen it, ruin it and then let it stagnate cos they now dominate and don't have to update it. They are like the K-Mart of the computer/electronics world.
