Luminate is an earth friendly festival of music, dance, art, creativity and sustainability on Canaan Downs, Takaka Hill, 30th January - 3rd February 2009.

Join us to celebrate the ancient summer harvest festival of Lughnasadgh, on the new moon midway between the solstice and equinox.

Luminate is a family friendly festival, a place to share knowledge and skills, be inspired, participate in workshops, receive a massage, join in drumming around the fire, re-energise on the dancefloor, relax with a warm chai, watch an enlightening movie, be in harmony with nature, and celebrate a sense of conscious community.

We are delighted to announce the return to New Zealand of the internationally renowned ADHAM SHAIKH (Interchill, Sonic Turtle - Canada) who rocked the main floor at Uprising New Years '07 with his outstandingly funky blend of world grooves, dub and psychedelia... With 2 more years of collaboration and production since then, we are very excited about what Adham has in store for us at Luminate'09.....



Over the years Adham has worked with and recorded many talented musicians from around the planet.

Weaving together soundscapes of the ancient and the immediate with the tribal dub grooves, his LIVE sets bridge the gap between the organic and the electronic, between inner and outer space.

Also, as a Global Rhythms DJ, Adham mixes a fusion of sounds from around the world. His sets are a blend of styles and traditions from Dub, Psychedelic Trance, Electro, Breaks, Downtempo, Funk, Bhangra, Latin, Brazilian and Afrobeat: transmitting tribal grooves from ancient traditions.

Bluetech's love of the melodic and exquisite sense of sound design makes him one of the most ingenious producers today.

Bluetech's sound covers a wide spectrum of styles - deep ambient, dub, techno, atmospheric, tech house, minimal, dubtech, spacious and exotic. While encompassing musical touches from different parts of the globe, as a classically trained pianist and master of the art of software production, he presents a total blend, crossing genres and musical borders.
Evan describes his music as “incubated in dreams, flows of energy from ancestral sources, the shape of the wind… a primordial electro-dub alchemy.”

Bluetech created the labels Native State Records and Somnia Sounds to release his own music and music from other artists who cross boundaries between ambient/chill and more idm/experimental sounds. Bluetech has also released two albums on Aleph Zero Records and is currently working on a third for release in 2009. Recent collaborations include an album with legendary Steve Hillage and a tour and forthcoming album with Pitch Black.

Loopus has established himself a reputation for the so called "funkedelic" sound: a mixture of psytrance and funky disco sounds… a totally free crossover of influences with an electro, progressive, jazzy, circus feeling blended with the technical discipline of psytrance: a mind twisting psychedelia with a pulsing full bassline...

Loopus has released tracks on various labels from all over the world including Digital Psionics, ZMA, Flow, Candyflip and a first album on Demon Tea Records. Loopus in fabula originally was a duo, from Milano, Italy with years of musical experience. In 2007 Matteo took over the Loopus projects.
Matteo formed his own label Fabularecords, releasing two albums as well as putting together compilations from artists all around the globe with a funky philosophy who are looking for something "different" in the broad psytrance genre.

Loopus has played in almost every corner of the world and has developed a blended Live + DJ set featuring a special task: slowly bringing the dancefloor into a relaxed, happy, funky atmosphere full of laughs and funny smiles...

.....YESHE AND THE WORLD CITIZENS (AUSTRALIA)......

Yeshe is an incredible Mbira player with years of training in Africa and extensive experience touring internationally. With his band the World Citizens he toured Aotearoa last year and they were such a hit that they just had to come back again this year to share their uplifting and beautiful music with us.

Multilingual singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Yeshe is a world nomad and has lived in over 20 countries embedding himself in their music and culture. Born in West Germany, Yeshe became involved in the flourishing 70s African music scene and by the age of 14 was performing with a variety of percussion ensembles guided by world renowned Ghanaian master drummer Mustapha Tettey Addy.

By the age of 17 Yeshe hit the road as a drummer, percussionist, bass player and backing vocalist with a variety of bands and dance troupes, spending his winters in different West African countries.
In the 1980s Yeshe left Europe to explore Asia and its music, spent 5 years living in Japan as a session musician, teaching percussion and travelled throughout Asia to study different percussion styles including Gamelan Orchestra (Bali).

From the early 90s Yeshe has been based in Australia, playing and touring with numerous bands there and internationally. Yeshe has been recorded on 20 or more different albums with as many different artists around the world.
He also continues to teach dynamic percussion workshops to share his love of the music that is such a big part of his life.

As well as performing live, Yeshe will be hosting African percussion workshops at Luminate
