Just browsing a few jobs in london, and wondering what a reasonable salary is in london. I know what the pound converts to, but what's a good, average salary, equivelent to living on say $35-40k in Wellington, or a bit more in Auckland....

Someone gave me a good rule of thumb. Double your £ salary to get a NZ$ salary, and after all your expenses you will have relatively the same spending ability...

Or course there are more things you want to spend on - i.e. holidays (its what you do with money here). So I would say a relative equivalent of $40K would be about £24K. But that might just be cos I'm too good at spending my money...

I earned $36000 at home....I earn £27000 now.

I think it works out kinda the same....if not better here. Smile

Don't bother accepting a job for anything under £20000 a year. I can't see how anyone can live comfortably on anything less than that!

The cost of rent, food, drink, everything's quite expensive as it all has a London markup.

Say if you earned £20,000 gross but you pay £90-100 pw in rent (about usual for a reasonable place) it's like grossing $40,000NZ but paying $220-250 per week in rent for a place in Wellie. So you don't have as much disposable income.

Plus there's travel, (around £20-30 per week usually, unless you live close to work which if you want a decent job isn't likely as they're all in tube zone one and you'll probably be in tube zone two/three), the fact that everything's more expensive in London - e.g. for a pint of beer you'll pay close to £3 in most places in London.

But get out of London - say Birmingham, where I am - you pay £2 for a pint, food's a bit cheaper, rent DEFINITELY.

And converse is you're joining the pound-a-pill generation over here - in other words if you don't drink, you can get away with spending about £25 on a decent night out, including entry ticket, about three, and a bottle of water. Not that I take those sorts of things, I just heard about that.

Unless of course you are a complete mutant, in which case they won't want to pay you anything Smile

What market you looking in Mutant?

From memory you're in IT? Are you considering contract vs. fulltime? Contract will prob earn you less for the first year or so (its all about UK experience) but from there it just goes up... apparently... Of course it comes with its risks...

Fulltime - a good salary is around £25-30K.
[quote]
P.S. that is an my estimate an opening salary based on 2-4 years experience.
[quote]
yeah, I'm in IT development... altho my skillset is kinda odd (not a lot of Windows stuff), so it might be hit and miss on a *really* good job... I wouldn't mind contract, but I'm not to fussed either way

From what ive heard the bottom dropped out of the IT market in london ome time ago
[quote]
Don't believe everything you hear. I'm doing quite well. But my skillset is kinda odd too. In specialised areas there is a lot of work.

The contract market did go very flat a few years ago (not just UK but worldwide) but it is building up again, from what I've been told. Also know a german contractor who has business out his ears and is occasionally trying to tempt me to move to Germany to help him out.
