Right so I stream media to a PS3. I haven't made any major changes to windows lately that I can think of, but yesterday did install an update from MS - Core XML Services service pack 2.

Now my WMP media server/sharer thing has stopped working. PS3 reports 'no media servers found'. Verified connection between then, rebooted, set all WMP related services to 'Automatic' and made sure they were running. When I try to go into media sharing settings on WMP, it brings up an error dialogue about some kind of missing service or component, but as far as I can see, everything should be working.

Scoured the internet for an answer, even the MS knowledge base, which led me round in circles with dead links (as is often the case).

Checked registry keys as well, and file permissions for WMP database and program dirs.

Anybody else run into this, or know a fix?

Has the update changed any Vista firewall settings?

No idea, but I had my very first Vista BSOD the other day, I was shocked! Shocked

I haven't checked that, but I'm pretty sure the issue is within WMP- Clicking on Options > Sharing gives some error message as mentioned above so I'm certain its WMP thats boned, but will check the firewall also when I get home =(

I found WMP to completely blow for media sharing to my PS3.

I would recommend you use TVersity - takes a little bit of setup but the pay off is worth it, it has so much more functionality as a cross network sharer.

Yeah I'm with you on TVersity, but as this is my main desktop machine, I try to keep is free of as many running processes etc as possible. will use that as a last resort, but would rather WMP just worked like it was supposed to. Wishful thinking on vista of course Neutral

had two or three since I bought this nb in Jan

all caused by ati graphic card device driver error

seems to be common with vista and gc's on 2 screen set ups such as I have

anyone else with this problem and know how to fix easily?

^ Don't use ATI cards sorry so could'nt comment.

In other news, with Vista SP2 now available for download, I was thinking of creating a slipstreamed ISO of Vista to keep on my PC, so if I need to do a re-install at some time, I wont spend half a day just installing windows updates. Has anybody done this? There are various how-to's on google but was wondering if anybody had any firsthand experience?

Haven't done it for Vista, but have several times for XP. No complain of product.
[quote]
For the hassle of creating a slipstream cd would be more than a couple of reinstalls, just ghost it.
[quote]
Just download the vista sp2 network install which will give most of the updates youve spent installing in one go.

Slipstreaming isn't that much of a hassle any time I've done it.

a) Here is copy of base install DVD
b) Here is copy of SP
c) Go!
d) Burn resulting ISO
