Last BDO 2012

Anyone else gutted this year is the last big day out... I am so many awesome memories...and taking a day off work to dance and listen to awesome music...awweeesome ...I will miss it so bad... Best BDO memories???

Run your brand into the ground with shitty lineups and ever increasing ticket prices, reduce the size of the event and then moan people aren't buying tickets? Fuck em.

I lost interest in the bdo when we lost our box. Fuck working your way through the crowd on such hot days with the normal plebs :p

2001: Adam Freeland, Pnau, Pitch Black, Greg Chuchill, Darren Emerson, Roni Size & Reprazent, Carl Cox, in pretty much exactly that order, was clearly the highest quality Boiler Room lineup ever. FACT.

Hahaha I loved being in the mosh pits it was fun...gosh tho I agree with you kris it is too expensive espeically this year, well not expensive just not value for money.....they should have done the tix for $80 this year...

I think it was a shame that electronic music wasn't so well represented in subsequent years at the BDO. Or maybe my tastes became too narrow to appreciate the acts they did bring.
Anyways I got to see some legendary acts over the years like new order, kraftwerk, iggy pop, joe strummer, the flaming lips, aphex twin and luke vibert, dave clarke, luke slater (alright those last 2 might just be legendary for me). The BDO holds lots of good memories for me, but I don't care that it's going/gone as the lineups (as mentioned by others) got progressively more and more boring.

kraftwerk and underworld would be my stand out BDO memories Both just spectacular. though to be fair, a lamppost would've been spectacular to me too at that particular moment - but that's neither here nor there..

When a promoter starts lecturing the punter about what a favour he is doing them all, you know it is time to call time on the gig.

Its a little bit sad, but also they have been going downhill and the price has been increasing and i'm a little too old for it now, so i'm not that bothered. Also, slightly cynical that this is just a stunt to sell more tickets for friday's concert.

I have far too many good memories to name though. I have pretty much been to every one of them since I was 15. Everyone singing under the bridge was pretty epic. Korn and Blink 182 moshes were INSANE. The boiler room at 11pm when the main stage had finished and everyone crammed in.

I've never been. By the time I took any real interest, the line-ups just weren't as good. I really wish I had gone 10 years ago when BDO was in its prime.

Seeing Cold Play and just being at the front of the crowd not many people around watching Chris jamming on his piano … Lily Allen so so cute… Killing Heidi… Courtney Love’s band Hole,.. Running from Chili Peppers to see Chemical Brothers, losing my mind over the awesomeness and not being able to decide on what to do…All the hard out rock bands too. moshing like a maniac.. Blink 182… .Dancing to everything in the boiler room…Being 19 and being able to wear teeny shorts and a bikini top with my doc boots LOL omg…. Just dancing to all kinds of music all day with all types of people.. I loved it every minute of the day..it’s sad and I wish I could go this Friday but can’t …

But oh well guess it’s what happens when you live in the ass end of the world no one wants to come to us really …. Time to start saving for Glastonbury.. my sister went this year I have to get my ass over there before I get too old

Just to play devils advocate on you promoter hatin carnts ...its just that I saw him on TV last night and the point he makes about logistics getting the show over the Tasman is obv correct.

I mean...who knows if hes realy creaming it or not, but it it WAS commercially viable for him to come to NZ with quality acts Im sure he would do it. Its possible that having to put NZ on the schedule helped lead to the downgrading of star acts, and now the BDO is Aus will get better and better. Again...if it was viable to do great shows and make money why would he leave the market and let someone else in?

And/Or is it possibe.... that all those music stealing carnts out there means star acts are charging more to do gigs, since their other income has been compromised (not sure if this is fact, just speculating)

Actually the best bits about BDO was playing shows the night before. One year we were playing a show at Pappa Jacks and Joey Jordison (Slipknot/Murderdolls) Byron Stoud (Fear Factory and SYL) and John Dolmayan (SOAD) rocked up and watched our set. Got some mad props from Joey and John for my blast beats ( a bunch of pics and drum skin signings too!!) Hung out for the whole show...one of the best gigs we ever did. Had to up it a lot knowing those dudes were watching. Awesome fun.

previously many acts dropped their fees to do the BDO - huge exposure across two countries and a nice holiday too boot... whereas ya Kayne's et al are only concerned with the lucre and charge accordingly... the world's changed in other words - not for the better

there are a multitude of reasons why BDO is successful across the ditch but not quite so here of late... which can't be answered in a soundbite

doesn't help that the live music world has progressively been corporatised over the past decade meaning independently owned and operated festivals like BDO are often not able to book those they'd like due to contractual arrangements with acts (ever wondered why many international festivals have virtually the exact same lineups?)... not too mention the internationals weren't booked and aren't booked for our market...

personally as the music has appealed less to my tastes I've enjoyed the day out more - no pressure to be anywhere at any time, just a day wandering enjoying what I happen upon then bailing when bored

The dates in Aussie are running right through to the middle of January. Traditionally, people would blow their money on Xmas and new year and often they got BDO tickets as gifts or planned for them in the pre-Xmas spend. In that environment running another gig was madness, especially as it was under priced compared to what people pay to go to, say, Laneways ($127 this year) and the brand proved financially ruinous to ever.

My off the cuff thoughts are there is now possibly a gap in the calendar for a complimentary gig to laneways, attracting a different crowd, and charging around the hundy mark. It isn't like electronica festivals with a music focus - as opposed to a Highlife style high heels event - are coming out of our ears anymore. Such a festival would be the only time you would get to see a quality international and local DJ line up in the same place and at the same time in a whole year.

I don't get people complaining about price increase at all...it was well over $110 back in the 96/97 days prior to when they had a few year breaks...it's call inflation...everything has gone up...artists fees have gone up...the price of Jet fuel and subsequently price of flights have gone up...the cost of labour for sound and stage setup has gone up...overall ticket prices haven't increased fuck all and what you get for that amount (usually, this years awful lineup aside) is amazing.

Truly, this was always the best part about BDO, and really, that's the biggest loss imo. I don't think you get that effect so much at other festivals. I'm happy to be proven wrong though.

I wonder if with BDO out of the way, such an event could run closer to the end of Jan than the first week. People are back at work, but that means they have cash coming in, and really, people are still in holiday mode in Jan even if they are working.

I agree, there's certainly lots of opportunity for someone to put something really good on. Sadly, the people I trust to do it justice all learnt their lessons about risking it all on a big, unproven gig.

Auckland is screaming out for bigger better outdoor gigs in/close to the city imo. Lets not taint it with the brands of failed gigs past.

almost all the nz festivals I've ever been to (the wider world is slightly different) tend to be dominated by one demographic or another, so you don't get the same cross section of ages and fanbases, they tend to cater to one style of music and thus get the sort of people that are into that music which makes for a different atmosphere

most festivals are populated by white middle class kids... which is a shedload less colour than the bdo manages thanks to them always having some rock/metal and hip hop etc which appeals to many whom the bulk of the lineup leaves cold

I think the thing that made the first BDO (and a few subsequent ones) cool and all the rest lame as fuck was that it was a bit more "underground" for lack of a better word. Then it got really commercial. It still had lots of not-so-commercially successful NZ bands to pad it out but that didn't work with the main drawcards imo. Well, this is for me personally, not saying my feelings on it represent the ultimate truth of it's rise and fall but that is what killed it for me... years ago.

West just dug his own grave. He could have taken the loss and turned things around next year, but instead he's destroyed his own brand by confirming what people thought - that BDO is dunzo.

Festival attendance has become incredibly lineup and trend dependant as the ticket price has skyrocketed. In 2008, Coachella had to pay Prince $5 million (for one set) at the last minute to salvage their ticket sales. This year, they booked Radiohead, expanded to two weekends, and immediately sold out the entire thing - even with Radiohead playing their own arena tour in California. Because Coachella is trendy again and the lineup is excellent for everyone.

However, West is absolutely correct when he says that Northern Hemisphere acts see AUS shows as a cash cow. They can charge twice the price of their US and Europe shows and Aussies will pay.

BDO got themselves into the position where they had to book headliners who could almost fill those stadiums by themselves. And as West points out with Eminem - why play six BDO's, cutting your set in half and dealing with festival sound and staging, when you can make 2 or 3 times as much playing your own shows?

I had a good time at the BDO I attended (Rage, LCD Soundsystem, Bjork, Dizzee), but here's what I think killed it:

If you're trying to do a "Something for Everyone" festival, you have to give everyone something they like THE ENTIRE DAY. Not just one or two acts for everyone. Otherwise, tailor the entire lineup to your client base. THAT is what killed BDO. Once ticket prices rose beyond the level that teenagers could readily afford, their client base became late 20 and 30 somethings with jobs. But aside from the headliners, who were booked from the VERY small pool of acts which can carry a stadium, almost the entire rest of the lineup was booked for teenagers. This led to a big dichotomy in the crowd, and a big dichotomy in the lineups. Which has now killed the whole thing.

My 10th and final BDO. Shame to see it go out with a whimper though. Still, I do get to see Best Coast, Foster the People and Girl Talk. Wish Kanye was coming grr.

Plenty of highlights over the years: RATM, Prodigy, Basement Jaxx, Chemical Brothers, Dizzee, Lupe, The Streets, Magic Numbers, Neil Young, UNDERWORLD, Metallica etc etc BDO has given me some awesome memories : )
