So, it's been a while since I've been home in Aotearoa, coupley years, and I was just curious to find out if there's many people doing live laptop performances down there these days?

I recall there were plently of "live" electronic acts, but mainly hardware based as far I can remember. What kind of software based performace scene is developing, if at all?

As a punter , to me records CD's , indeed any music making box is merely a means to an end ..... music is the overall objective. I guess someone who has invested countless hours of their time learning to dj (not to mention the $$ in the vinyl itself ) might have a different perspective although the more openminded would still be in it for music not specifically to be a dj as such.

I think 'live' would be way cool ! Its much more like being a musician isnt it ????? From my view its more creative .... you're working from the raw material kind of.

I havent seen or heard of much 'live'performance around AKL

i do know of a gig happening at the Odeon (cnr MT Eden and Symonds) on Sep 9th I think where some guys are going to use various boxes to make noise heheh - tho I dont think they would describe themselves as techno - more electro....but I will find out more details later and post them here
later. They did play at Paradise bar a while back ....

We played an Acid Techno set at Flipped Out in Welly about a month ago off PC using Mix Miester. One of the main advantages of doing this was that we had access to so much music on CD that we wouldn't have had otherwise.

Vinyl = $20 for 1 or 2 tracks
CD = $20 for 10 or 12 tracks

It's not hard to figure out the maths

Having said that, I don't think I'd do it again. We almost didn't get to play because of PC issues (mainly due to the PC almost not recovering after a power outage earlier in the night), and also the way Mix Miester works, you tend to be a track or two ahead in the headphones. You can't quite 'feel' what the crowd is feeling....

Still, I think digital is the way of the future. Maybe not CDJs, but some other fully digital way of playing.

but thats YOUR enjoyment , not the punters.

Dont forget you are in the service industry (if you're a pro DJ) and your professional objective is to provide music for the punters to enjoy.

But I'm just arguing for the sake of it here :+) I understand what you say about vinyl sounding better although as an ex audiophile the notion of actually touching a record (except on the edges) gives me shivers ;+)
