Laptop RAM

It looks reasonably easy to install and stuff, so I thought about upgrading my 448 mb. heh

Do I need to know anything, that you can think of, before purchasing extra stick of memory?

I know the following:

My laptop allows for maximum of 2GB of RAM. There is no need for the maximum, I'll be happy with 1GB stick.

Is this a reasonable price? I can't seemed to find another price for the type of laptop I have anywhere else!!!!

The same memory stick is US$60 from Crucial... heh

I can get for ~$75 shipped if you like. DDR400 is starting to get hard to get hence the price being twice what more modern memory is.

I wont worry about the optical drive bro. Laptop is old and is on it's last legs. I just want it to last till Feb, then can I afford to buy a new one. Thanks for sussing that one out for me tho.

One thing I don't get tho. I've had a 448 mb ram before install. There is only one memory slot on the bottom of the laptop. When I was putting in the one you gave me kris (1GB), I had to take out a 256 mb stick...

Now, there are no other memory slots. I've checked. I've also checked if there was one under the one I took out. As per online guides (I don't have manual anymore), this laptop should have two removable memory slots. And in fact I can put another 1 GB stick! But my ram is currently showing as being 1.18 GB...

I wanted to put the 256 stick instead of what is obviously a much smaller block of memory (180 mb?), somewhere...

But where???? Am I not getting something?

nah, before, you had two 256 MB sticks in there, those 2 x 256 MB = 448 MB.

You now have 1 x 256 MB + 1 x 1 GB = 1.18 GB. The maths works even if it doesn't seem like it.

I never got an A in math, but 256 X 2 does not equal 448...

Is some of that ram is used for something else? Like graphics?

512 - 64Mb set aside for the onboard graphics = 448.

I bet the first 256mb is soldered on the motherboard. Common'ish in old ass machines. It's VERY rare that you will find two memory slots in two different locations.

Yeah, I guessed it's inside somewhere. All good. I'm happy with speed now. I wasn't gonna put another GB into it anyway, was just curious. As I've mentioned before this is a temp upgrade, till I buy a new lappy. Thanks guys.

also, my point is, even if you find another stick, it will almost certainly be identical to the one you took out (i.e. 256 MB)

Like neil said, two slots in two diff places. One on the bottom and one more than likely if you remove the keyboard.

yeah, the IBM / Lenovos have their second slot behind the keyboard.
