Cobain and the singer of REM were reputed to be good friends, and Cobain said that REM were a huge influence on Nirvana.
They (REM) apparently kick started "alternative". There is a doco about the Pixies (I think) called "Loud Soft Loud" and I remember hearing this. It could have been about Nirvana.
REM didn't kick start alternative, not at all - they were part of a generation of bands that came out of punk, post punk (hardcore in the US) and various other well established genres that all got lumped into the (US) college rock scene that then became widely called "alternative" - in the UK it was all lumped under Independent or indie
no doubting their influence on their peers and vica versa but lets not give them a crown no single act deserves

Colbert said in a statement: "I look forward to meeting the Radioheads and leveraging their anti-corporate indie cred to raise brand awareness for my sponsors."
