LADY WAKS (RUSSIA)
Lady Waks is a one-woman industry: DJ (Best Female DJ, Spanish Breakbeat Awards); Promoter, Producer (Best Breakthrough Producer, Breakspoll 2009), Pioneering Graffiti Artist, Designer & Label owner. She is an all round modern media phenomenon.
Since 1999, she's been pushing breakbeat sounds through the various club nights, parties & festivals that she organises across mother Russia.
Waks got her big break in 1999 when she was recruited to host a Hip Hop show on "Re-Cord", a St. Petersburg Radio station. In 2000, she realised that her life was not meant for reporting but for creating, and so she focused all of her energies into promoting; "In Beats We Trust" (IBWT) was born, a major club night which was cited as one of the best club night in 2004 by TimeOut Magazine. Since its inception, IBWT has hosted just about every major breakbeat artist in the world and is one of few club nights outside of the UK to have international residents: Atomic Hooligan & Jay Cunning!
With the tremendous success of IBWT under her belt, Waks set out for greater glory in 2005 and launched the first and still the world's only major Breaks-only festival, Breaks Arena. Breaks Arena is the largest Breaks festival in the world and its achievements were finally recognised at this year's International Breakspoll Awards, scoring a nomination for Best Large Club/Event. It was the first and still is the only event outside of the UK to be nominated for this prestigious award.
As a DJ, Waks has played the world over and holds a residency at The Tunnel in St. Petersburg. In 2006, she was recuited by Westbam and Hardy Hard to join their Electric Kingdom Tour after the enormously successful launch of her debut titled "Listen" and has not stopped since, playing at the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Germany, Brazil, London and Australia. It all culminated in her debut at the 2008 International Breakspoll Awards, where she also found herself nominated for Best Breakthrough DJ!
In 2007, Waks released the world-wide smash hit, "Minimal", a playful stab at the minimal and progressive scene. The track was immediately remixed by 2006 Breakspoll Best Producer, The Rogue Element, and both versions of the track found themselves at the receiving end of tremendous support, a score of accollades and praise from producers and DJs the world over. The original version was selected for Krafty Kuts' Fabric Live Compilation, as well as by Soul of Man, owners of the greatest breakbeat label in the world, Fingerlickin Records, for their Radio 1 "Essentials" Set! It went on to be nominated for and was a favourite to win Best Single at the 2008 International Breakspoll Awards, narrowly missing out to the Plump DJs' "System Addict". The Rogue Element's Remix was also nominated for Best Remix, making it the first time a track and its remix were nominated for both the Best Single and Best Remix double within the same year!
In late 2007, Waks completed "Shake It", a funky breaks tune with a solid beat, which sparked what was almost a bidding war between the major record labels in the scene. The tune was backed by "Records Back", her take on Justin Timberlake's "Sexy Back" and a playful stab at CD and Laptop DJs and “Destination: Planet Bass†in 2008.
2009 saw the release of the “Ya Booty†by the Ragga Twins’ new project, Breaking News, which was remixed by Waks on her own label, Bass Planet, and “Take It Easyâ€, a progressive rolling breakbeat joint with a hot Missy Elliot sample.
