Grandmixer DXT - allegedly the first guy to scratch and first "turntablist", when he scratched to "Rockit" (by Herbie Hancock). That was in 1984....

Looks like Herc was around earlier as a DJ, but it doesn't mention him scratching... so maybe DXT wasn't the father of hip hop as such, but perhaps turntablism? Definition bashing here!

DXT was part of Zulu Nation, along with Flash, Bambaata, Jazzy Jay etc...

Yeah, you might be right, maybe DXT was just the first "turntablist" because he did so much innovative stuff.

My reference for a lot of this stuff is the movie Scratch, which Theodore and DXT are both on.. although it doesn't make the distinction clear regarding times of events anyway - probably in part because no-one really knows exactly who first scratched, and did all these things?

Regardless, they all played a big part in the early evolution of hip hop.

herc was apparently the guy who spun two of the same record back2back to create a beat.
the zulu nation is a bit of a wider movement than just those old NY djs, although they started it (i think?) its kinda like this global network of headz doing all sorts of covert biz dealing with underground music (hiphop,jungle,dancehall etc). don't think theres any official members in nz, its a pretty involved process becoming a member. i've got a friend in belgium whose a member but i've never really been able to decipher wot shes on about half the time.

its pretty hard to atribute the invention an entire genre to any one artist, lets just say cool herc was the man, as were may others whom i would gladly bow down before.

Definitely, maximuss. I guess there are always pivotal artists in any genre though, and I think we've pinpointed a few of those! Still interesting to read about
