Well when you support a team, share in their joy, feel pride and glory and boast to your friends etc... it's only not arbitrary if the team reflects you personally in some way.

Supporting your son's soccer team isn't arbitrary. He's your son, you have control over how motivated he is, how well coached he is, how directly supported he is etc. But supporting the Warriors just because they happened to be born on the same land mass as you? And half of them don't even have that much Razz It's pretty arbitrary. It doesn't reflect you, your values, your strengths etc one iota.

If other people choose another variable with which to base their arbitrary allegiance, then so be it Smile

Heh.

What about the fact that they are called the New Zealand Warriors therefore they represent this fair nation in club league football. Is an allegiance to our nation arbitrary too? Razz

ps. I'LL SMASH ALL YOU CUNTS THAT DON'T SUPPORT MY TEAM!! Mad

I see your point, but I believe the basis of any support in sports, wherever possible, should be geographical. Values like this need to be upheld in this era of professionalism.

Even more so when it's in the context of an Aussie comp Wink

I lot of people were supporting the Winfield Cup way before it was the NRL, and way before it had a warriors team, so have grown up with an Aussie team as there fav, can't see a problem if the Warriors are not your fav because of that IMO

So the mere name forges this ever-lasting connection? Pffft Razz Most nationalism IS arbitrary, I've always stated that too. That's why I'm not a patriot. There are some things that I feel I directly and signiciantly contribute to, and THOSE things I will feel pride for and allegiance too, but 99.9% of the stuff that goes on in this country has shit all to do with me, and wouldn't have been different at all if I was in Australia instead Razz

I don't see how "The New Zealand Warriors" represent me as a person. Therefore any allegiance is arbitary; unless I happen to be friends with one of the Warriors, or if I'm a signiciant donator or something like that. Smile

Yeah I still think of them as an Auckland team. The jersey only has "Warriors" on it under their emblem so it's clear that they think the brand is more important than the location but they made the decision to change it from Auckland in '01 because they didn't earn to alienate any other Kiwi fans who may get put off by the Auckland moniker.

Wonder if it will change should a Wellington team ever get in...
[quote]
lol Wellington Dolphins lol. Not with that fkn gay name they wont.

+ 1 thats its the Auckland Warriors. Auikland actually had a great record vs touring teams and in the annual game vs the Winfield Cup champs. I saw Dean Lonergan smack Paul Sironen and give him a bloody (broken?) nose...and Dave Watson ripping the fuck outta the Kangaroos midfield to allow Kelly Shelford to kick a late penalty for a glorious 24-22 victory

As for supporting oter teams well I'll always have a soft spot for South Sydney, but when the warriors joined the comp switching was mandatory. Souths actually have more kiwis in their squad tha any NRL team FWIW

Heh. That was a good ad that. I'll never forget the spectacle that was the opening game too. With the ANZAC theme. Massive.

Wellington Orcas btw. Razz
[quote]
ahhh ws it. where the hell did i get Dolphins then.

Nope....As we all know Im wrong about Rugby League like.....never, so Im pretty sure the original competing bid vs Auckland was Wellington Dolphins. They are the Orcas now huh idk

tbh, I generally support the tigers. I do this for a few reasons

1) because I think it's kinda pointless supporting a team if you can't watch the game (warriors games are extremely rare on tv, most tigers games are shown on tv).

2) watching games is so much better if you support a team.

I basically picked the tigers because 1) they're my local team, and 2) I like Benji Marshall.
[quote]
in this weekend's game, i'll probably support the warriors... maybe...

but tbh, the game won't be on tv, so won't be that excited about it.

I support the Eels. Grew up with them in my family home. Everyone supported them. I also support the Bunnies because my 1st cousins played juniors for them.

I dont support the warriors because Wairangi stole my shoes when he was playing for them. I still am yet to recover from that. Fucker he was Mad

I know you're trolling, but how can having a friend in the warriors make it somehow less arbitrary than supporting it because its your own geographical area?

Lots of people are nationalists/provincialists, and for them it's not an arbitrary choice at all.

Because if you are a good friend, then you are actively and directly supporting them. People play better when they're happy off the field yeah? If you're a good friend, then they play better because of you. So that is a connection between you and the outcome of the game. Less arbitrary... So yeah, if you're just a casual friend then it's still just arbitrary.

Balmain was my team back in the day. Mainly cos Olsen played for them, and then Gary Freeman. Go the Wiz!
