Japan beats the USA at their 'national passtime'.

Always found it classic that they call their series the 'World Series', and now they have to call what is essentially a World Cup/Series the 'World Baseball Classic'. Apparently the second time in 3 years.

I think it was called the "world series" cos it was originally sponsored by the "world newspaper" or sumthin.

Even if the myth were true, you can bet your arse that the geographical scope of their 'world newspaper' would be dubious anyway

Spalding guide of america in 1887 named it "Worlds championship Series" (later shortened to world series) in the hope that other nations such as "Australia and Great Britain" would soon play and "become rivals", none have. Also, as it was american league and national league meeting, then a bigger name was used..world....as regards america hoping Australia then Great Britain would play it, source states... "This didn't happen, but the name "World's Championship Series" stuck.
