seems a lot of people have problems with nortons....

is there an alternative or is nortons still the only one worth running?
[quote]
Try using AVG or NOD32. I use NOD32 and it seems to be fine. AVG is a free antivirus program.

...I have issues using Norton on my PC in that it doesn't run properly.

there are plenty out there .. but they all do the same thing ...

I install .. virus scan my system(s) then un-install

Just remember it has to be easy to use when suggesting Razz

try using mcafee on your pc? sits in the background scanning all the files, pretty much fully automated Smile
alternatively if you have windows xp there is a microsoft antivirus program in the servicepack2 as well as the new firewall. both seem to work very well Smile

whens sp2 coming out?

nav scans files as they are accessed and i still trust nav more than most of the others but i recently had a problem with it as it didnt auto update and i got 3 virus files - tho they didnt get activated. Ive been looking a trying some other one and maybe using norton on a gateway computer as a backup.

you probably got that off me you know, i had the same thing last night..... running housecall found a few files Smile

im gonna try nod now...

lol well i have no viruses at the moment that i know of, every file is scanned as i receive them and have a full system scan every day while im at work Smile

sp2 is due for launch in just under 2 months i think

i have the RC1 of sp2, it runs really well, fixed a few bugs i noticed but it is mostly updated for antivirus and firewall Smile

Are you able to send it to other people or are ms pretty tight on that?

pervert: it should have picked them up when i copied them to my hdd especially when they were old virii. I reinstalled it anyway.

MZ making a virus scanner is interesting - it almost needs to be done as people are very lazy with it but its going to mean a problem for the virus manufacturers and it could be on the way to ms providing as complete service - which frankly i am very worried about.

There are benefits to it but i think they are outweighed by the negitives imo.

I use systemworks anyway so im tempted to stick with nav.

I used to use, and had no issues with.. Panda antivirus.. just in the middle of ordering it again

http://www.pandasoftware.com/home/

Hardly puts a dent in system resources.. something I always used to have an issue with, with Mcafee and Norton.. been using AVG for ages but feel its time to beef it up a little.

Anti Virus software is always a lot of fun. I have tried NOD32 which killed my machine, PC-Cillin, Norton and one or two others. One thing they all seem to be able to do is take up loads of room and slow the running of my comp down. A good program to use is by Symantic (its late and I can't be bothered with the spelling buzz). It came on my work laptop and does a wicked job.

How good is SP2, been looking at downloading it but on a dailup I want to make sure it's worth the time it'll take b4 I go ahead or should I wait for teh revised version?
[quote]
symantic/norton is the same tho symantic is probably the commercial/enterprise version i am unsure of the difference - we run symantic antivirus at work.
[quote]
I've been running Mcafee Pro 7 and had no probs thus far. I would stay away from Nortons as had real probs with the applications I use (various CAD packages and modelling software).

In the free stakes...don't overlook AVG

I've just rolled out Computer Associates eTrust at work; looks good so far, no complaints.....
[quote]
kronic it is definately worth getting for the security updates and it seems to have a few other bug fixes ive noticed as well, as soon as i installed it my computer was runnin prob about 10% faster but then my computer has always been pretty screwed Rolling Eyes

i would say if ya only on dialup to wait for final release, its due pretty shortly. It does gett annoying though updating itself with new files every hour, but hopefully there shouldnt be too much of that with final release.
The firewall is very userfriendly but dunno how good it is, but its alot better than the old one with the fact that when a program finishes it actually closes that port again unlike the firewall currently with xp. that leaves teh port open after you use the program

Word! I rolled that out at a clients place and their distributed protection is pretty sweet Smile
[quote]
installed avg yesterday and removed nortons and havent had any issues since
[quote]
yeh we use CA Etrust at work and for our clients
but CA stuff seems pretty problematic to me. I know that using it at home hasnt protected me from bad shit - so the jury still out on Etrust IMO
[quote]
Yeah, protection remains to been seen for me too, haven't had any issues yet, but then I've also had Norton let a few through before.

I've got some minor issues with BSOD's on some of our lower spec 95/98 boxes since it's been installed, but I'm talking old Pentium boxen.

The reason we use it is that the Ministry of Education signed a bulk deal with CA via IBM to provide it free for all state schools for all platforms, including *nix and portables, and covering all school computers and also all staff home computers as well.

Cheers Bob

I have never seen it on any shelves over here but was everywhere in the UK, and that probably answers that question. Now it raises questions about why one is performing better than the other. Not to worry i'm sure i'll find something I like or ask the guys overseas to send me copy of it from work.

Possibly as it has for a while been the main AV the virus makers are targetting it and trying to find ways around it?

It would probably happen to the top AV what ever it was.
