Gauging people's opinions on "Flawless" by The Ones: because it's on Top Of The Pops and got played on Pepsi Chart (and perhaps 'cause Havoc plays it) is it therefore considered cheese? What qualifies a house track as commerical bollocks?

Yours anally,

I often ask myself the same question.
Even though Im not a big fan of the Ibiza type club music I quite like this tune. Am I less a house fan if I happen to like the odd cheesy track? Are underground purists limiting themselves with their pretentious wank? I guess the expression "cheese" is quite fitting as there are many types of cheese.

i think agumj hit the nail on the head with "pretentious".

i just brought this track and it did pass thru my mind that it maybe a bit cheesy.. but then i realised that hey fuck i think its a kickin tune and why worry about what other people think.. i spin for myself and my flatmate, no one else.

I dont think this track is cheesy as this tracks been an underground hit 4 a while now and rockin the big rooms way bfore the "main stream success". Its a pity how sometime good music which gets mainstream success is sometimes considered as cheese

Scandal how cute of you to investigate the cheesometre scale of this track - cheese it may be, known by the masses it may also be,played by some of the more questionable bo selecta's in town it certainly is but despite all of this its a funky little house tune that I know puts a smile on your dial so why not say to hell with what people think and accept that sometimes a little cheese can be good for you!
[quote]
i think it's subjective - what maybe cheesey as hell for 1 person another might think it's the shiznit. anyway who cares, Gene Farris cranked at Judgement Day & he played Basement Jaxx "Romeo".
It sounded wicked tho' cause he was chucked in from nowhere. & like shazzy said cheese can be good for u

I used to be mr underground till i realised that cheezy choons are only chezzy cos everybody likes them, and if everone likes it it must be good. So now i've divided choons between 2 categories,
1) what i like
2) what i don't like

not good and bad because how can you tell someone that the choon they spent 6 months making is sucky cos you don't like it. I also stopped listening to the radio which is what tends to establish cheez ie if it's on the radio all the time it's cheez. Now I listen at the shop and buy what I like, which as it turns out is real cheezy us house

Hell, I love "Flawless" despite the high 'n' mighty might get all high 'n' mighty about it's cheddar content - merely using it as an example for the "what consititues cheese debate".

Believe me I was grinning like a block of Colby on Firday night when Roger Perry dropped (or should I say "teased") Flawless; and before I knew it I was singing away to The Talking Heads... nice one Roge'!

Oh, and shazzy: you'll need more of a tan before you can competantly go using terms like "bo' selecta".

Aiigghhht!!

Everyone should take note of Touch's system of
categorising records. Nothing more to say really
Nail on the head.!

Big difference between cheese and
Commercial. Let's think of examples of both
Spiller/groovejet If this aint love
Moloko Sing it back
Stardust Music sounds better
The Ones Flawless
Pete Heller Big Love
Afro Medusa Pasilda
etc. etc. etc.
How about some examples of what you think?
Personally I feel that 'Flawless' sends shivers
up my spine & it is that good with minimal
cheese ie : less vocal

If I like something that some could consider
cheesy and I think fuck it I'll get it anyway... I'll
search for this original release to maintain a
dignified collection rather than buy it on mass
production label like Positiva as in this case
[quote]
i think all funky as house is cheesey as all fuck!!! but hey, that's why we luuuuuuuuuurrrrrrvvvvvveeeeee it isn't it?? what with all the hugs and friendly smiles and cheese drips from the ceiling.... hey you gotta love that cheese!
[quote]
Don't ya just love the diva singing a soulful choon to you raising you up on a spiritual level as opposed to just a massive snare roll and 160bpms smashing your brain.
[quote]
I think it is up to the individuals own taste of
what constitutes "cheese"
touch got it right when he said about, what I llike
and what I dont like...
For instance.....I didnt like "spiller", but have got
a bit of vinyl called "starlight by the Supermen
lovers" is that cheese because it is on ZM?
up to the individual....whatever tune gets the
people going, thats my theary....A freind of mine
dropped a cypress hill "insane in the brain" at a
party we had in Welli, and people remember the
party for that tune!
I think the question is, do u like it? or u going to
be an ostrich and keep your head in the dirt
trying to be a "purist"?....whatever tweaks ya
nipples I reckon....!

hi all
there is a wicked track called 'RAPTURE' by iio that may or may not have surfaced in nz clubs yet - i'll put it in this post cause it fits in with this debate...
HUGE dance floor filler in the uk, and is played in almost every dj set on radio 1 / galaxy etc..
i first heard it think about 5 and a half months ago it was pete tong or one of the radio 1 djs played it - well b4 it became so popular. loved it then, love it now...
i don't believe in dissing any music - each to their own - if it moves you play it!!
it's in the stores in the uk now - can download off the ministryofsound.co.uk - check it out..
was tiestos fav track this year (was silence last year)

also damien, are you the boy from welli who was mates with nicki, niels, adam etc and seeing rachel?? just curious to put a face to a name.

xx ally

hiya lilallygrl.
i see that iio track "Rapture" is on the MoS 2002 annual that's just been released. there's plenty on there that fall into this so-what-if-it's-popular-it-still-rocks-MY-world! category. i totally agree with everyone here - we should never get too precious about music, it's all good fun... and you'll just wear your chin out if you rub it too much. Smile
wooohoooo! go the cheeze!!!
[quote]
you just watch how popular Rapture will be now it's on some compliations - it's on the new renaissance cd too - the pinkish red cover one.

Although I'd disagree that Flawless is outright cheesy. Listeners of Funky House need to learn that cheese is not necessarily a bad thing. For example "Night at the Playboy Manson" sounds like it should be placed on crackers and served with a good Sauvignon Blanc.

I think we often confuse cliché with cheesy e.g.: Spiller.

If people want REAL cheese they should sit back and relax to some Tom Jones or Bert Bacherak.
[quote]
lilallygrl - \'Rapture\' came and went according to seige. Gone into the \'don\'t play no more\' bin!

I love the track though. Specially that Deep Dish Space mix!
