Hey people - i want to get a portable mp3 player and i'm currently considering between these two options. I was just going to get an ipod, but then i found out about the creative mp3 players which look quite impressive. They are cheaper than Ipods with more storage capacity for your money (a tad over $500 for a 20gig creative compared to $580ish for a 15 gig ipod if i recall correctly). The creative model is a bit bigger and not as sleek as an ipod. Also, i'm on a PC so i think i'd have to spend extra for an ipod to work with my computer. Does anyone out there have a creative mp3 player and like to offer an opinion on it? Or does anyone want to tell me why i should undoubtably buy an ipod instead? Are there any other alternative mp3 players i should be considering. I'd like to use it for data as a portable hard drive too is this possible with the ipod?

Thanks for any help i may receive.

yeah the ipods can be used as hdds

the mini creatives have a compact flash 4 gig minidisk in them which is formattable to work in cameras so theyre pretty damn cheap cf cards.

Im going to look at a mini ipod soonish.

You want to get your hands on one of the creative players..(not sure which one tho) that plays Video as well, one even has a built in divx decoder...!!

not sure if the tv outs woud be allright for NZ connections tho, but im sure you could get an adapter..

Depends what you are after. It is well documented that the ipod is the easiest to use and is incredibly intuitive. If you can, get some hands on time with both. Personally I have an ipod and im sure once you hold one you wont want anything else.

If you have firewire you wont need to spend anymore to get an ipod running on a pc. Otherwise you need to get the usb2.0 cable. Plenty of shootouts on the web. Google is your friend.

Go to www.cnet.com, click on music, then look at reviews for the two.

Thanks for your replies guys. In relation to what a couple of you said about the ipod being cool - i figure that a lot of the cost of the ipod is paying for the apple brand and the styley advertising. I'll check out those reviews that are linked too.

Thanks for taking your time to reply

you should take the time to _use_ an iPod, so easy which is important when you're on the move etc.

SMF, stop bring your SO hot right now topic into the Tech forum...

I think I might just get the 15GB iPod, 40GB will be too big and eventually I won't carry that much music, still unsure, will check it out if I have enough money in the States

I suggest you leave dictating what people can and can't say in the tech forum to the forum moderators. There is nothing wrong with smf's comment there. Go away.

I got the 15GB version - holds heaps of songs especially if you import them in to iTunes as AACs.

PSA: Get the 20 rather than the 15, because you get the dock, case and remote, as well as the extra space.

I was thinking of 40GB which might be too big

Neutral
[quote]
yeah but the price difference between the 15 & 20 is quite a bit...

You don't need the dock or remote for a good iPod experience..

Plus you can buy 'em later if your really find you need them.

Ipods good for Macs, Creative good for PC's, creative has a longer lasting battery which can be replaced but also has a few flaws like a bit bigger than an ipod and a dicky cover, However if you have heaps of WMA files like myself, there is no way im going to convert 2000+ songs so i can buy an ipod for $600+ that has a battery which in 3 months or so only lasts a couple of hours, Creative also has the best playback quality out of any player on the market

iPod is the fashion
Creative is the practical

the newest version of itunes can read non drm wma.
[quote]
That is true but the 3rd Gen iPod can't so defeats the point really

The iPod battery can be replaced.

only by apple it can, i should have said it doesnt have a "removable battery"

What's this one that HP is gonna bring out in August in the States that will make Microsoft shit in their pants?

Confused
[quote]
Its an HP-branded iPod. HP and Apple have signed an agreement whereby HP will rebrand the iPod and sell it as well as preinstalling iTunes on all its computers...

Cool, extra service, but still expecting to get one sometime in June/July though Music
