I've seen a bit. Games so far have been a bit dull.

AB's innings was hilarious. Gets to 50, Morkel drops a sitter, then plays probably some of the best cricket for his next 50 runs that I've ever seen

Really enjoying the cricket. AB's innings was INSANE!

McCullum is pathetic at the moment. His innings last night was painful to watch. He could barely hit the ball. At one point he got a slow long hop from a leg spinner and failed to even get a run from it.

Pretty good points actually Z, we all have friends (or know ppl at least) who turn into unbearable idiots at a certain level of intoxication. Personally Ive always thought alcoholism was all about volume so the "functioning drunks" def count. But i guess from a life perspective thats not necassarily correct

Nope he made it pretty clear a couple of weeks ago that he is retired and there is other things he will be doing after the IPL.

I feel so sorry for McCullum poor guy is in all sorts. Rosco has looked good all along. Bar hayden the aussies havent done to well either. Some big Indian stars around, they are producing some HUGE hitters! SA is doing pretty fucken well AB for president!

I have found the IPL to be boring as hell to be honest.

A shame because I was amping for it- as mentioned, apart from a group of Indian PLayers and a couple of Saffa's it's a yawnfest.

Yeah there were an abundance of awful games early on in the competition which didn't help too. But it's been much better in the last week or two It's not something I was overly excited about anyhow, I just like to follow it.

Today I realised:

I HATE THE IPL

I realised it as I watched Eng vs WI highlights and saw KP stretch his 6'4" frame forward to flick a length ball effortlessly through midwicket without a single cheerleader or firework in sight.

It's the rampant, cheap commercialism. I watch a lot of so-called 'commercial' American sport but the worst Superbowl television timeout cannot even compete with the IPL. There are no "Cingular Sixes" (instead of touchdowns) or "Wrigleys Xtra Points". MLB doesn't have "Big League Chew Homers".

There is no ANALYSIS in the commentary - cricinfo has a great list of the banalities.

The teams have no identify; I couldn't tell you which players were in which (I simply scan the scorecards for how NZers have done - actually I remember that bazza is in Calcutta)

The IPL is disgusting because the coaches and commentators, and probably the players too, are there solely for the money. In the past, sports have sought sponsors so they can keep going; now the equation has been turned around. Cricket isn't the raison d'etre, profit is.

When you have the captain of the once great West Indies admit to the media that he's not too concerned if test cricket dies, it's clear that this IPL nonsense is more than just a harmless addition to the cricket itinerary.

It's a shame it's almost certainly here to stay

Im not going to hate on the IPL for a few throw away comments from a drop kick like Gale. I have been enjoying the cricket and certainly dont think the IPL is the death of test cricket!

Yeah exactly. I'm fine with the IPL. It's not like anyone from NZ/Au/Eng or whatever was really going to identify with the teams after only a year or 2. Perhaps if the competition lasts a long time people will develop more of an affinity for the teams. But for now it's light entertainment and there has been some good cricket played, just not by the people we (generally) wanted to see it from. So what if they get lots of money- they deserve it. Chris Gayle is a fucking basher anyhow and I'm frankly surprised his test record is as decent as it is.

I have problems with the cheerleaders, fireworks, DLF Maximums, and idiocy from the commentators.

And it's not that I don't like 20/20s, the NZ vs India 20/20s had me chewing my fingers (not nails) off.

This is the only one of those things I have a problem with, and it certainly isn't limited to the IPL!

I dunno Im kinda with vadz on this one. I wasnt anti 20/20 or even IPL when it first surfaced but recent developments are concerning me. This might seem like a tenous connection but look at the decline of the once mighty Wets Indies in the last few decades. We've all heard theories on why ...Basketball/social decay etc but watching the windies go about their business its almost like the players care about themselves more than they care about playing for their country.

The old windies teams used to play with fire and pride, this lot look like they are just waiting to get paid .....and that clown Stanford has only accelerated their greed

Sure we here cricketers now saying "test cricket is still number one" but a lot of them arent acting like it, look at all the guys who "retire" only to bugger off then pop up playing 20/20 as long as someone will have them..... and what about the new generation of cricketers? What are they going to choose over the instant riches/glitz and glamour/shorter games/MORE MONEY of the various 20/20 curcuits that are inevitably going to pop up all over the world, and the steadily declining in scheduling, popularity and pay of test cricket?

I reckon up to 75% of them will choose to specialse at 20/20-ODI cricket ie where the $$$$ is at. Thats 3/4 cricketers looking to totally bypass test cricket. Wonderful


Test and particualry ODI will prob never completly dissapear in our lifetimes, but it will certainly decline in popularity with players and administrators leaving less poepl following the game, less players playing it, and therfore surely a decline in quality of the cricket itself

All so a bunch of mostly non cricket fans can head out on the piss for 4 hours and yell at a multi national franchises in games no one will remember in a months time. You cant tell me thats not a concern. I think this shit could creep up on us until yep...it has totally compromised if not ruined test cricket
