Was talking a while back with a mate that this would be a perfect use for them. Hyundai have also announced that for their new range topping Eqqus, they are dispensing with dead tree owner manuals and instead supplying an iPad loaded with a Hyundai app instead. (Well, they haven't said iPad specifically, but that's what is pictured in the mockups so far)

Why on earth would you want to sync potentially hundreds of megs of data over a piss slow Bluetooth link when you have wifi right there too, and most of the support for it there too? Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR maxes out at a paltry 3mbit, which you'd be lucky to get in practise.

yes its true that troubleshooting utilities are an indication of weakness. When I was implementing an Oracle gui app on a WAN years ago. I saw the Ping test feature and it made me realise that the app feared latency. Sure enough we couldnt deploy it in the furtherest nodes of the WAN.

This could be the opening sentence to an awesome novel...

That said, the ability to use a stylus where appropriate would be nice.

in the Herald today they are promoting their application to read the Herald on the IPad
why would one need an application to view a website? (other than the browser of course)

sometimes the apps are a bit more user friendly - I use the TVNZ app on my iphone over even the mobile version of the NZH. The TVNZ app is almost perfect as a news media reader imo - they have sport as a whole different section and I never see bullshit 'entertainment' crap.

Layout and touch friendly setup is the general answer. It's like how Facebook's iPhone application is better (IMHO) to use than even a website on a full laptop...

Yeah, as already noted, the apps can do a WAY better job than a simple web page. I particularly like the NYT app, it's really neat. Looks just like a real newspaper, but if you want to read the small 1 col article, tap on it and bang you're there. Super fast too - most of the news type apps cache when you open them while online, so you can then read at lesiure offline if you don't have a 3G model.

BBC News app is pretty cool too.

Liking it, looking forward to ios4 on it though. Haven't really browsed web on the home laptop since I got it, although Facebook aint that pretty. Once Flipboard gets fully sorted it will be amazing way of viewing news/social links for topics you're into. RSS made pretty I guess (even though it ain't using RSS)

Flipboard is a brilliant concept, but it falls down when you have to leave the nice part of the Flipboard interface to "View on Web". I'd like it much more if it worked like say the NY Times app, pulling the whole article down into the app.

Prices for ipads under contract are pretty mean... im now considering on. Only issue is while the ssl vpns we use at work have a mobile app it seems it only allows access to internal web resources... which i can get through exchange anyway.

Care to share those prices? Orcon doesn't seem to actually want to tell me how much without going through the ordering process, and even when I go thru that, gives me no option to actually select an iPad like it says it should.

Just had big update, can now have 21 different feeds, page layout is much better but yeah still have to go to web for full view. But have now played with various Twitter accounts of bunch of mags to see how it renders and finding sone good ones. Vibe magazine is gold.
Is a bit weird having read only to Facebook, quite a different feel to it

I have been using one for a few days now and it is much as I expected. I could see it replacing 80% of the work I do on a laptop but I would still need a laptop so its actual usefulness is a bit limited from a portability pov.

Yeah bob I'm the same. Has replaced the laptop in the lounge and personal laptop use has gone to about a quarter (at best) of before, but obviously still use it for loading and editing photo/video stuff.
Was really useful for short trips away though, much easier to lug than laptop.

I've decided that there IS in fact a use for a cheap, Windows-based tablet, and it's that they would make a way better in-car device than an iPad because of the availability of various media player apps targeted directly at in-car use on a touch screen.

funny really, the first MB air was a bit of a "wtf".

A bit more oomph and the ipad to show the way it seems like a viable product line.

First gen Air was fucking stupid. It's only trick was being thin, other than that, it was the same size as the base MacBook, same spec with less ports, no optical, and you could buy at least TWO MacBooks for the same price.
