That will be sick with the Google Maps app on that thingy (should have waited for the 3G GPS one of course, and doesn't seem to have left the USB cable free to sync the damn thing with new music but hey you gotta be first right?)
Not yet complete, needs to be hooked into stereo etc but man once people get these worked out it will be pretty mint - and not that expensive for a headunit

And why the iPhone/iPad etc can't sync their iTunes/iPhoto stuff over wifi I don't know...
[quote]
Course, the McIntosh amp they used drives up the install cost Razz Personally I'd lean towards the TomTom app if I was serious about using it as fulltime nav.

Was talking a while back with a mate that this would be a perfect use for them. Hyundai have also announced that for their new range topping Eqqus, they are dispensing with dead tree owner manuals and instead supplying an iPad loaded with a Hyundai app instead. (Well, they haven't said iPad specifically, but that's what is pictured in the mockups so far)

As for wifi, well they don't do that because that's what Zune does. They have to be DIFFERENT. That, and you can update via wifi:

Overall, the tear-down of the iPad was fairly easy.

bluetooth you mean

supposed to be on the agenda as with multi-tasking in OS 4.0
[quote]
Why on earth would you want to sync potentially hundreds of megs of data over a piss slow Bluetooth link when you have wifi right there too, and most of the support for it there too? Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR maxes out at a paltry 3mbit, which you'd be lucky to get in practise.
[quote]
because sometimes you just need to and at the moment you just can't

ok?
[quote]
If an Apple product doesn't do something, then clearly you don't "need" to do that. Razz
[quote]
Of course he doesnt mean bluetooth, it should be removed from all devices fucking stupid technology.
[quote]
good for when you don't have cables or routers n stuff

Haha you just reminded me of that Steve Jobs quote from the other day... "if you see a stylus, they blew it. In multitasking, if you see a task manager... they blew it."

There's a hundred different reasons why this statement is retarded but it just wreaks of classic Apple arrogance, its no wonder I can't stand their products.

One could be mistaken (as I have in the past) for thinking that's just some arrogant anti-apple over simplification to prove a non-existent point about the superiority of PCs by anti-mac brigade type people who never actually used one type deal blah blah... But I've since come across mac-tards who genuinely think like that so its actually chillingly accurate.

While procrastinating my assignment lasnight I got sidetracked into seeing what average people think of the magic mouse now it's been out a while. Came across this gem comment opening: "I'm a Mac guy so I like things to work well and look great at the same time. The new Apple Magic Mouse is an exceptional piece of technolog-" <snip> btw the magic mouse sounds pretty average.

I actually agree with him - when it comes to consumer-targeted tablets and phones, if you're having to pick up a stylus or pull up task managers to swap you really don't get mass consumer UI models anymore...
[quote]
Totally agree also.

yes its true that troubleshooting utilities are an indication of weakness. When I was implementing an Oracle gui app on a WAN years ago. I saw the Ping test feature and it made me realise that the app feared latency. Sure enough we couldnt deploy it in the furtherest nodes of the WAN.

This could be the opening sentence to an awesome novel... Very Happy
[quote]
That said, the ability to use a stylus where appropriate would be nice.
[quote]
now why would you want to do that?
[quote]
I can sorta understand why you'd do that that.. in other news my mate got his iPad stolen out of his car with his MacBook too.. guttered... Sad
[quote]
Drawing applications, handwriting... you can buy a 3rd party stylus though.

hey a question about the IPad

in the Herald today they are promoting their application to read the Herald on the IPad
why would one need an application to view a website? (other than the browser of course)
[quote]
sometimes the apps are a bit more user friendly - I use the TVNZ app on my iphone over even the mobile version of the NZH. The TVNZ app is almost perfect as a news media reader imo - they have sport as a whole different section and I never see bullshit 'entertainment' crap.
[quote]
Layout and touch friendly setup is the general answer. It's like how Facebook's iPhone application is better (IMHO) to use than even a website on a full laptop...

They're currently developing an iPad app actually...
[quote]
just went and held one

so unexcited
[quote]
Yeah, as already noted, the apps can do a WAY better job than a simple web page. I particularly like the NYT app, it's really neat. Looks just like a real newspaper, but if you want to read the small 1 col article, tap on it and bang you're there. Super fast too - most of the news type apps cache when you open them while online, so you can then read at lesiure offline if you don't have a 3G model.
[quote]
BBC News app is pretty cool too.
[quote]
EconUS This is why the iPad will never replace newspapers http://ow.ly/2CMqD

So I got given one on the weekend (sweet!)
Liking it, looking forward to ios4 on it though. Haven't really browsed web on the home laptop since I got it, although Facebook aint that pretty. Once Flipboard gets fully sorted it will be amazing way of viewing news/social links for topics you're into. RSS made pretty I guess (even though it ain't using RSS)
[quote]
Score!

Flipboard is a brilliant concept, but it falls down when you have to leave the nice part of the Flipboard interface to "View on Web". I'd like it much more if it worked like say the NY Times app, pulling the whole article down into the app.

Going to try 4.2 this afternoon I think.
[quote]
Oh nm, still beta.
[quote]
Yeah I'm thinking this thing really needs multitasking. Feels a bit weird without it
[quote]
Prices for ipads under contract are pretty mean... im now considering on. Only issue is while the ssl vpns we use at work have a mobile app it seems it only allows access to internal web resources... which i can get through exchange anyway.

[quote]
Care to share those prices? Orcon doesn't seem to actually want to tell me how much without going through the ordering process, and even when I go thru that, gives me no option to actually select an iPad like it says it should.

Just had big update, can now have 21 different feeds, page layout is much better but yeah still have to go to web for full view. But have now played with various Twitter accounts of bunch of mags to see how it renders and finding sone good ones. Vibe magazine is gold.
Is a bit weird having read only to Facebook, quite a different feel to it
[quote]
I have been using one for a few days now and it is much as I expected. I could see it replacing 80% of the work I do on a laptop but I would still need a laptop so its actual usefulness is a bit limited from a portability pov.

[quote]
Yeah bob I'm the same. Has replaced the laptop in the lounge and personal laptop use has gone to about a quarter (at best) of before, but obviously still use it for loading and editing photo/video stuff.
Was really useful for short trips away though, much easier to lug than laptop.
[quote]
I've decided that there IS in fact a use for a cheap, Windows-based tablet, and it's that they would make a way better in-car device than an iPad because of the availability of various media player apps targeted directly at in-car use on a touch screen.

In other news, damn those 11" MacBook Airs are fucking sweet. Pity they are fucking $1699*, not like about $1200.

*Plus $200 for 4gb ram, not user upgradable as it's soldered to the logic board, plus $490 for AppleCare unless you buy it on eBay. Neutral
[quote]
so... news at 11
Apple stuff ridiculously expensive.... ;+)
[quote]
funny really, the first MB air was a bit of a "wtf".

A bit more oomph and the ipad to show the way it seems like a viable product line.

First gen Air was fucking stupid. It's only trick was being thin, other than that, it was the same size as the base MacBook, same spec with less ports, no optical, and you could buy at least TWO MacBooks for the same price.
