iOS4 like/ dislike?

Yay or nay?

Not much change on 3G or 2nd gen touch devices, but app folders, and unified inbox are worth it alone. As is double-tap for iPod controls from any app.

Those devices also miss out on:
*Multitasking/App drawer
*Home screen wallpaper

Oddly I couldn't make multiple Exchange accounts work. I could set up the second one, but it simply refused to connect.

now if I could only get around this stupid admin bullshit in Win7 to download iTunes 9.2.....

I don't really think anyone could dislike it? Not much to dislike really, it's just a feature upgrade.

it still has a few minor issues with XT apparently.

People on 3G's seemingly have a bunch to dislike. Reports of shabby performance.

Surely all the people with 3G's will be throwing them out shortly anyway and buying a shiny new 4?

You need to bear in mind that Apple have been selling 3G's alongside the GS's until now. Hell I just got my old man one about 2 months ago since he doesn't need the additional GS features and we were price-concious.

Interesting reading here on how Apple provide OS updates FAR longer than any other smartphone companies, including Android, and that devices with no iOS4 support (1st gen touch, 2G and older iPhone) only make up 10% of all iOS products.

Im running a 3G and its slow but I have enabled Multi-tasking (not that any of my apps use it yet) and also have the background/homescreen enabled.

Will def be upgrading to 4G once they arrive by the looks of it mid August. No complaints bar the speed from me.

Apple might have to sort out the antenna problem first

I had been holding out for folders (was 11 pages of apps now just 3). I don't really use the multitasking app switcher though as now all my apps are way more accessible just from using folders.

I also really like the way photos can now be accessed by location on a map.

anyone tried the new zoom camera feature?

I did notice it seems to take pictures so much quicker.
Folders - Ive always kept myself to 2 pages, now its just one.
Voicemail doesnt seem to work for XT users (im on just-as-shitty vodafone).
Dont like the task manager as I used to use dbl click for launchign the camera - havent looked to see if i can turn that back on yet.

I've heard a couple of other people say that about the doubleclick, but hell, that's twice as many clicks as it takes to start the app from the icon anyway so

ugh, it's just digital zoom? You get 1000x digital zoom in photoshop.

I know that old chap but still useful, new iphone will be better but this is good for now

I think when you zoom in it rebalances the exposure so you dont end up over/underexposed as much as taking a wider shot with lots of bright dark contrast.

Course, you can't add optical zoom with a mere software upgrade

Ah but who knows what crap apple have stuck in their phones that's just not supported by the software yet...

...Well I suppose everyone does thanks to that website that pulls everything apart hours after it goes on sale but y'get my point!

the devices over-estimate signal strength and have done since the beginning (something I've noticed)

iphone4 users reporting problems may just have been in patchy signal areas

a software patch to remedy this will be available in next few weeks

Some technology magazine has independently tested them and apparently there is a signal problem with the antenna. I doubt such a hardware issue can be simply fixed with a software update.

And is anyone buying that displaying the wrong number of signal bars is a bug? I bet it was deliberate to make the phone look better for the US consumers as the network you get the iPhone on over there has issues.

And what's up with selling a faulty product but not supplying the suggested fix (the bumper) at sale? Surely they can't get away with selling something with a problem, then charging people more on top for the fix?

yeah that looked like a lame explanation and apple is looking worse and worse over this what with the latest leaked internal memo telling helpline staff for AppleCare that: "We ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers - DON'T promise a free bumper to customers."

It seems that in the US they leave it upto the legal system to enforce fair trading practices.

Apple is being sued over this now.

I dunno, AnandTech did a pretty full-on review of the SNR levels etc and while attenuation of signal is a bit worse on the iPhone 4 than the Nexus One it's not that much more, and overall signal performance is a lot better.

Kinda sounds like AT&T just sucks as a network and the software was always overcompensating on just how strong the signal was.

I dunno if anyone else is having this problem but my updated camera software is causing my 3gs to hang

Anyone able to explain why (on vodafone) I have so much trouble with the iphone (3GS) for data connection. the FB app is one of the worst but even in places with full 3g signal strength I have trouble with Maps, safari, TVNZ app and email.

Sometimes it will show full strength, time out and then seem to switch to 2G for a while before coming back up.

It seems to be getting worse but I am also using the data network a bit more so it might just be me encountering it more.

the 3gs is not 900 mhz compatible and the iphone 4 is, which will explain that to a degree bob

from what I've read, apart from that antenna issue it receives way better than 3gs

also that explanation from apple (if you believe it) would go some way to explaining it

Apple's iOS operating system has "two critical weak points for which no patch exists," the Federal Office for Information Security said.

Opening a manipulated website or a PDF file could allow criminals to spy on passwords, planners, photos, text messages, emails and even listen in to phone conversations, the agency said in a statement.

"This allows potential attackers access to the complete system, including administrator rights," it added, urging users not to open PDF files on their mobile devices and only use trustworthy websites until Apple publishes a software update.
