Income based fines?

I would support a system in NZ like they have in some European countries where the amount of a fine is determined by a person's income.

It just makes incredibly more sense to me, in terms of both punishment and deterrence.

I'm unsure as to the deterrence these fines would engender , resentment yes, those with significant means (ie copping high fines due to income) never speeding again... nah

When the punishment is monetary, uniform penalties aren't uniform at all...

I appeciate that, I don't see how higher fines for higher earners makes the system any more fair - its not just about the offender, its also about their transgressions - which I am assuming these progressive fines would be applied to minor offences not major

please note I don't consider speeding tickets or many minor offences fines to be very effective as a deterrence

The NZDF uses this in a way to determine how many days pay you get docked for a punishment.
