I drive a 92 mitsi lancer(evo look alike). Last week my engine f*cked out and well I need a new one lol. I only have in between $1500 and $2000. I was thinking something on the quickish side with turbo (if im gonna get a new engine might as well do it properly).
So any suggestions on what I should get? I would like to stick with a Mitsi engine. Also does anyone know around how much a mechanic would charge to stick in a new engine. Thanks.

usually id say stay about as far away from an evo 1 motor as possible (because there all shagged to buggery) but if its only done 66,000kms it should be ok, looking at that one make sure it comes with turbo, intercooler, ecu etc you'll prob need to upgrade the gear box as well

On that budget things are gonna be pretty tight, Im not a mitsi engine expert but try and find something which doesn't need new fabricated engine mounts, u'll save a bit of cash there, u'd think an evo motor would bolt straight into a lancer or might require an evo cross member but shouldn't be too much of an issue, most mechanics charge around $50 an hour for labour but im not sure how long it takes to do one of those conversions, with the right tools shouldn't be more than a couple of days.

You will be able to pick up a GSR 4G93T (1.8l turbo) complete for around 1.5 - 2K...Then again u'l hav to hav a bit put aside for labour.

You gonna have to get the g/box dun. 4wd. So gonna be a mission. Possible to go front wheel but u gonna hav a shitload of power goin through that shitty box.

Should just save n buy one complete... prob around 6-7k for standard as one with high km's. haha

Evo would be difficult as u gonna need to upgrade the brakes n everything else that wears to get a cert...Not too sure with the gsr...close to the same sizing maybe?

oh yeah, gearbox for a start, and brakes, you won't get away with standard non-turbo brakes Smile

basically, $2k aint enough. Smile

dont try and go 4wd - its a big mission and much easier just to sell up and get a GSR or an actual EVO. Turbo front wheel drive will be fine but it'll be wheel spin city and a joke to drive in the wet

yeah i compltely agree...its not worth your hassle cause the rear floor pan is different so ud have to chop and change that, best to save up sum dough and buy a GSR or EVO

forums.nzmmc.co.nz for any help tho Smile

if that's your budget you're not going to come even close to the cost of engine, engine parts, wiring, etc, brakes, decent gear box, certs, insurance, etc.
i suggest talking to a mitsi expert about the later model lancer or even galant n/a engines that may fit nicely. Smile
[quote]
errr what makes u think that a later model lancer engine will fit into a cd5a shape lancer?

did u realise that all the engines are reversed?

and a n/a galant defiently wouldnt fit either...they range from 2L to 2.5L v6 and have nothing in common with a old skool gsr.

rant/

i suggested talking to an expert about which later engines MAY fit and the galant engines are mostly 1.8

nice of you to rant tho

ok so in other words sell ya car and buy a turbo Cool

I'd get shit all for it with a engine that doesn't run. Ok what should in stick in thats cheap then? Someone told me a 1600 fuel injected engine shouldn't cost too much so maybe I should go towards that option.

Why not just a replacement? Sell it and get a turbo
[quote]
there is no new generation engines that "MAY" fit, cause they are all reversed.

you could put in a 4g93 non turbo...you could probably get that complete for about 600 bucks, they are genearlly out of a lancer GTI.

if u really want answers go to "http://forums.nzmmc.co.nz" they'll help u out but will probably tell you to save up money and just buy a turbo or a mivec or something.

hey yeah... you could chuck in a mivec into ur car...4g92 (i think is the engine code) that would go nice Smile

u dont sound mechanically minded, so its going 2 be gay paying labour to get a conversion.

By far the cheapest easiest optiion, its all good to want a turbo but by far the easiest way to do is to buy a cheap standard turbo then do it up little by little

Coverting a car from NA to turbo is a mission due to everything thats been said e.g. you need to upgrade the gearbox and the brakes and the diff more than likely, the other thing is turbo cars can be a huge hassle if u dont get an alright one. I knew a guy that got a GTS-t Skyline second hand, 2 days later the turbo blew, turbo's aren't cheap unless you find a deal, and turbo cars are a shite load more complicated to work on.

big $$$$ I dont know anyone that has done a conversion that hasn't done it themselves just because its so expensive @ on average $50 an hour to convert everything plus all the parts you need. Best bet is to save and buy a standard turbo, there are ones out there that have been looked after, my Skyline had 100,000kms on the clock when i bought it, ive since more than doubled the power output and havn't had a single issue.

yeah, best to own a turbo, when u either have hook ups, or have a bit of mechanical knowledge...or even better...both Smile
