i've decided on a new more relevant alias, the poster formally known as james brown, shall now be known as shotta j,its my new dj alias as well as it reflects where i is pretty damn well at the mo (heavily in the dancehall!)
anyway, just got the new international obsever ep (on vinyl, mmmm)from different drummer on monday,(hehe, white label styles!!i am a luckly bwoy) and it f**kn rules the dance!,a brand new dancefloor dub tune called "london" and a wicked tabla driven remix of the track "vale",apparently tom middleton has got a new compilation coming out with a coupla of their tracks,go the local dubstyles doing the bizness overseas...
[quote]
Yeah big up the local dub

The second sideways compilation just came out as well, not strictly dub/dancehall but still quality sounds on the downbeat tip.
[quote]
Definitely, I can't say enough good things about that compilation. So i'll stop Razz.

Sup shotta j Smile
Yeah the International Observer track on sideways is wicked..... im keen to hear more new stuff from them.

That london track was on stinky jims show on tuesday, did you listen? If so, directly afterwards you would have heard

Satisfied - J Live (Coup D'etat)
and then..
Revolution 5 - Roots Manuva, Chali 2na & Wayne Paul (Big Dada)

And omg! If they weren't 2 of the wickedest dub influenced hiphopificated tracks I have heard for a long time., wicked tunes, cant wait to get em Smile

[quote]
sideways too is also well wicked.i think its gonna get international release thru different drummer in the next few months.my personal favourite is that juse track, his hiphop styles keep gettin better.
i missed stinky grooves on tuesday(out of town) but noticed he dropped the new I.O traks, its only him slowdeck and me gettin all the diffdrum/leftfoot white labels and promos at the moment Smile i am a luckly lil prick!
i think the roots manuva/chali 2na callabos will keep coming for some time, they sound wicked together.they first hooked up cos chali heard "brand new second hand" and hunted out mr manuva.

Craze played a nice version of Dubhead's theme song (from his bfm show) last night, proving that the reggae vibes still stand up on the dancefloor, even in such a shit hot set.
[quote]
He also played the coldcut remix of 'Paid in full'. Smile
[quote]
well well,
looks like i missed out on a wicked gig, didn't expect him to play reggae!
anyhow you two (chief and Bn1) try make it to OTC on thursday,we'll be spinning from 12 to 4 ish, got loads of FRESH dancehall, plus will be spinning some dubwise biz and heaps of hiphop and probably some old school ragga jungle.it would be cool to meet you fullas as you seem to be pretty goddamn musically ontoit.i've basically been givin thursday as a residency till i leave the country cos they are sick of the gear there getting f**ked by people that don't know how to use it,plus the fact that we've got some pretty diverse shit as opposed to the 6 hours of house or dnb they normaly get.will probably be playing either a friday or saturday there in the next coupla weeks also.
so if ya make it down sometime come introduce yourselves,my real names jared(aka shotta j,previously james brown/jah red).
[quote]
I was down there for a wee bit before Craze and its a nice lil venue. Will try and make it down again despite my early starts on Friday.
[quote]
probably just missed each other!
[quote]
Nice, yeah I didnt come down after craze, went to try for some sleep :/.

Will try to get down though friday or saturday is a better night for me, so let us know when you play then Smile
[quote]
yeah thursdays are pretty dodgy, esp when we get paid with free alcohol all night for playing!(i have to try and make it to work on friday afternoons),and when your drinking for free there is a tendency to overdo it.
[quote]
Thought about ckecking out OTC after Craze closed down but ended up at Fu with the rest of my crew so maybe next time eh?
[quote]
i think there are so many headz out there that don't realise that without jamaican music no breakbeat styles(hiphop,dnb,2step etc.) would have ever existed.theres a big knowledge gap as far as history goes.
count manchuki=jamaican sound system dj,first guy to talk rhymes over beats.(we are talkin the 1960's here!first rapper?).
dj kool herc=jamaican sound system dj who moved to NY,played block parties and basically invented hiphop,(first hiphop dj?)
[quote]
Bossman - Beenie Man, Sean Paul & Lady Saw

Wicked tune this Smile

off topic kinda and all but you know.
[quote]
yeah thats a cool tune, especially seeing beenie man has been way off form as of late, maybe hes about to make a comeback, back to the days when he was releasing pure gold anthems like "who am i".
[quote]
oh yeah, probably be doing the OTC ting next saturday night, should be a good night as lectures will have just finished.i will confirm once its all sorted tho.
[quote]
damn man, not much along these lines happen
down here in chch.

a little, just a smidgen.

damn it!

lucky fools!

Smile

Cool, some people into dub/dancehall. Just started getting into it. Can you recommend some good stuff as a starter.
Just know I like that real bass heavy stuff. Heard some King Tubby which I really like.
Do you guys know Roots Manuva has got a dub version of Brand New Second Hand about to come out?
[quote]
Yeah, that cds gonna be wicked Smile

As for my recommendations theres so much dub around and I'm not an expert but check out a dude called 'Twilight Circus' if you like bass heavy stripped back business that is the shit.

Also have a listen to the compilations that come out on Soul Jazz records such as the 100%, 200% dynamite series. Some good names and more obscure stuff on them. They are in quite a few of the shops round ak..
[quote]
The Blood and Fire label is the shit too, especially the Select Cuts series for wikkid reworkings of the old classics
[quote]
Think the Roots Manuva dub record is Dub Come Save Me, not Brand New Second Hand. Can never remember the order of those two.
Who are some of the classic dub guys. Know King Tubby, Lee Scratch Perry but not much else.
Went to this awesome reggae music exhibition in Seattle's modern music museum last year. They had a special room you went into to hear dub the way it's meant to be. Booming, shaking the floor and through your body. Was really cool. They also had a thing that compared original reggae tracks with the versions, so you could see the process of creating a dub.
[quote]
Here are the two albums that got me into dub codepeople

Augustus Pablo- King Tubby meets Rockers Uptown
Burning Spear- Garvey's Ghost

Other legends of dub, well, Sly and Robbie with the Taxi label thats still about, Scientest, King Jammy who almost singlehandedly started the whole Digital ting, and of course the mighty Mad Professor.

The premier vocalist would probably be Horace Andy, i love hearing snippets of his voice dipped into a murderously heavy riddim Smile
[quote]
nice choice chief,
that king tubby/augustus pablo rockers uptown album is probably the best dub album ever.
[quote]
Augustus is the bomb - I have a compilation called 'Augustus Pablo: Melodica King' which is an overview of the best work he did, and has some wicked tracks, then the dub version of that track straight after.., any augustus though would be worth checking..

Also I got a comp called 'X-ray Music' which I think is on blood and fire? with lots of different stuff mainly from genius people such as Lee Scratch, King Tubby etc. It was a cheap mid-pricer from memory but fuckin wicked so worth checking Smile

YAY!! MORE HEADZ!
Dancehall run tingz >>>>
Wheel Upppppppppp!!!
[quote]
Thanks for the advice everyone.
Just ordered that NZ dub compliation Sideways 2 to get sent over. What's it like, I remember the first one was pretty good so thought I'd take a chance on some homegrown stuff.
There's gonna be a big NZ thing at London club Fabric on July 14 with Salmonella Dub which should be cool.

International Reggae Day @ Galatos
[quote]

[quote]
I was lucky enough to win a ticket from Stinky Jim last week to Sideways, I'm really looking forward to it, so many good people playing Smile I'm hanging out for some nice International Observer bits, havent seen them for a while.
[quote]
There should def be a dub forum.

Do something illegal.
[quote]
I dunno if enough people are into it on biggie to make it worth having a seperate one..

Maybe a dub guru column now they are starting up? I'd be keen for that..
[quote]
fuck yeah....

bye the way melbourne run tings!!!!!!!
there are no record stores here selling much reggae/dub/dancehall but there are waaay more gigs here, the local soundsystem does big a party every month.plus heaps of other little tings....
the hihop scene here is off the damn hook.

ps. lee scratch perrys back wit the mad prof in september!
[quote]
Just to aus or over here too?
[quote]
Mad Prof will make it over, he loves us here, even had a track called "kiwi dub." I missed one like the upsetter last time he came, not this time. Also going to second the dub guru concept.
[quote]
Well if you guys are keen I will find out if it is possible for us to do one..

Perhaps we can collaborate to educate the biggie massive about dub/dancehall and other neglected forms of music Smile
