How many records?

I was around at a mates place the other night and could'nt beleive how many records he has now, he started dj'ing about 18 months ago and has over 500 records, and he reckons at an average price of about $22 each thats over $11,000 worth plus equipment.

Is this an above average number or do other people have more?

Surely you are taking the piss? Most djs have way more, ask Sample G, Andy Vann or Greg Churchill they probably have warehouses full of choons. I've got ten crates, I try not to count them or figure out how much money I've `invested' in them either.

Bit touchy today are we?, not taking the piss at all, i'm not a dj and don't want to be one so I have no idea of the average record numbers, but as i said in my post my mate started learning 18 months ago, NOT 10 fucking years + like the guys you mentioned so i thought 500 was rather impressive.

I guess my point of comparison is a lot of the popular k'rd dj' play the same shit week in, week out and i'd be surprised if a lot of them had more than 500, thats why I asked the question.

i've only been buying records for 3 months and i have about 60... i can't really afford to buy more than about 12-15 a month, but i would if i could 500 sounds like a pretty good for only 18 months - that's about 28 a month...

I've got heaps, and I don't play anywhere. They scratch easy and are kinda useless, yet I won't stop buying them. It ain't unusual for people like me, bedroom DJ's, to have a lot more than 500. But most of these people don't count their collection or price it out (too scarey)

thats why i find it so funny when people buy a couple of global underground and nice n urlich cds and think they can start dissing his music taste...

theres some dub/reggae guy in wellington with 15,000+ 7" tunes as well.. dedication.

Definitely way too scary to work out how much all you records cost. I'd say the around the 500 mark is about right, it all depends on the individual really. I've been playing about the same amount of time and have the same number. However I have a good mate in the UK who has been playing for years and even gets them sent to him by record companies, but he has only about 200ish. He is the kind of guy that will go into a record store and listen to 200 tunes and only walk out with 1 or 2.
At the other extreme I've read that Mr Cox has 80,000+ and they are stored in a storage shed he rents. Imagine trying to pick out your top 10 from 80,000!!!
