hiring cars in london

Has anyone had any problems with hiring cars?

I've been over here for over 2 years does that mean my NZ drivers licence is no longer valid?

Anything else to be careful of?

I'm pretty sure that since you've been over here for more than one year, you need to get a UK licence. You don't need to sit any sort of test, just go along to the post office and pick up the forms, complete them and send them off with your NZ licence. I think it's about £30 and it arrives in just over a week's time.

Whilst in hiring a car I doubt it would ever be an issue hiring a car when you've been living here for more than a year, the risk is should you have an accident and they decide to check, you may find the insurance not valid, even if the other party is at fault. So best to send your license off.

There's nothing you can do about them retaining your NZ one when they issue you the UK license. They take it, and you will have to get a new one the next time you're in NZ.

yeah, def get your UK licence after 1 year. as greenie said re the insurance it's best to be covered.

oh... and try to avoid a hire place within the congestion zone!! I once hired from a place near Baker St and ended up having to pay 2 congestion fees. doh!!
