to be fair, i don't think we can really judge hip hop from here in nz cos we don't hear all the work artists put in on the streets (e.g. freestyles & bootlegs). chingy didn't just release his single & album without getting a buzz on the streets first. in general, major labels won't back an artist without street cred first.
and maybe if we grew up as poor as some of the rap artists in the states, we'd understand why they 'sellout'.
