I land in London in 8 days and was just after some tips on what the essentials on getting set up are.

I have a bank account all done which is good but I've seen some good tips from time to time on here but never noted them down.

I think someone said something about registering to vote or some shit?

Thanks all Very Happy

Get your National Insurance number sorted ASAP. well... at least start TRYING to get it!! it can be a real bitch to get.

There is an email address that can make it easier to get an appointment (can't remember what it is tho) but... I'm sure there's been a thread about it on Nexus before. just have a search around on Nexus or someone else here might have it handy.

Register with a doctor! Very Happy
[quote]
How do you register with a dr? It's time i did that - any info would be good. Cheers.

Get the TNT and read it thouroughly, especially the tips part at the back.

If you register to vote it bumps up your credit rating (duno why), so that makes it easier to get a mobile phone and loan etc.

Registering with a doctor is simply a matter of finding a good one (very few), and one that is not full (even fewer!).

Welcome to London!!!! Smile

For doctors- call the NHS and get a list of local doctors in your area. Then go in and try and register...

Sweet guys. Have been here 2 days, getting lost and drunk and laughing at all the englad flags. Best one had to be a guy on a bike with 2 huge flags on his handle bars that were waving in his face so he couldn't see, but he trucked on, cycling through traffic getting toots of horns. But fuck it, he's doing his part.

Who the fcuk does cheap texting to NZ, 50p a text (with T-mobile) is outrageous!

Random question... but how much money had you all saved (NZ$) before you went to the UK?

I want to start my OE in a years time... so I better start saving now - but I need a realistic goal Smile

$20k

That covered flights, a months travel and expenses when I arrived.

It's been 6 weeks and still don't have a job and money is beginning to run out.

Why dont you look into some temping as a short term solution?
[quote]
I only came over with £1500 but i have a uk passport and a whole bunch of lovely friends to stay with...

And it only took like 2 days to get a whole bunch of different temping jobs with a minimum pay of £10 per hour (which I've been told isn't tooo bad for a first job in london). Pay rate seems to be on the way up for each job too. I kinda like temping (never done it before) as you can just say "i'm not in on this week or that day" and they say "okay" - no drama!

and i use o2 and i think international texts are 20p - o2 seem to have some pretty wicked prepay deals... Pink Winky Music

Thinking about it, but have a lot of meetings with recruiters and interviews at the moment. May look next week.

Good temping agencies anyone. Would prefer to work evenings, leave me free to look for work during the day, oh and enjoy the sunshine!

Let us know what field you work in and we can begin listing some agencies.

The thing with temping is, if you let the agency or employer know when you have an appointment for a permanent position, they can be very flexible with your interviews, providing you give them time.

Something to keep in mind.

I came to the UK with £1600 and that was just enough to get me started. Wouldnt advise coming here with anything less than that.

As much as you love your friends and they love you.....DONT OUTSTAY YOUR WELCOME. Its amazing how many people do!!

Have done marketing for the past 4 years
[quote]
I dont really know any marketing agencies off the top of my head.

It would be worthwhile phoning some companies who you would ideally like to work for, ask them questions about there Marketing department including, who their prefered recruitment agency is & contact names.

Once you start speaking to some of these agencies, also ask what other clients they have on board for further opportunities.

Now can offen be a difficult time of year job hunting with decision makers sometimess being away on holiday, but keep trying mate. The penny will drop.

Yeqah bro, done most of that. Am registered with 6 or 7 agencies. It's just frickin dead at the moment.

Maybe I can sell The Big Issue
[quote]
Haha, got nice lady who sells that outside my work.

Dunno if the commission is that great though huh?

mm in the same boat at the moment cant find a job....

Its funny this has come up. I've got a flatmate who just arrived from NZ a few months ago and he also found it really difficult getting the ball rolling with employment in London.

Same with a few others I've come across.

Back in New Zealand, all I heard about was how easy it is for Kiwis to walk straight into jobs over here.

Maybe once apound a time, but I dont think this is quite the case anymore.

Apparently this place was flush with jobs back prior to June and then it went dead - summer arrived and it got real hot.

I'm told late August it will pick up big styles.

Employment always goes up and down like that. NZ when I left was great if you were job searching.

At least this is my experience in marketing area.
