Great lineup of locals yet very lacking in the internationals. Clearly RNV knows what people like and whats in demand (last years internationals Nerd, Justice, Chase n Status, Boyz Noise, Carl Cox etc etc)
I think if Highlife had just one/maybe two of artists of this demand/calibre then Highlife would be an instant sell out.
Crazy P, Vandalism etc are hardly popular acts currently.
My guess is Coro-Gold will be the winner in the Auckland NYE festival this year (Shapeshifter headlining). If Highlife had shapeshifter then Highlife would be the winner in the Auckland NYE festivals.
I'm sure Highlife will still pull a good crowd but not sell outs with top lineups like Coro-Gold and RNV
RnV is an awesome festival although they get most of their big named international acts on Dec 29th and Dec 30th which are a 3rd of the cost than NYE prices.
We know what the masses like, but do you have any idea what it takes and would cost to get those kind of acts for a New Years Eve set?
To get acts of that profile on NYE for NZ is extremely hard and the costs are insane. If only the NZ public had an idea about this they would be speechless.
The prices for some of the top international DJ's are between $100k to $300k and you have to compete with the likes of Australia, Russia, Vegas, Mexico city and Rio etc in bidding wars to get them.
Coro Gold is not an Auckland NYE event, its in the Coromandel and they had Shapeshifter contracted for 3 years so other festivals cant get them.
So many NYE events happening around the country now that our popular NZ artists and any internationals on tour in Australia/Asia get chewed up very fast.
In saying this, we are very happy with our line up (International and local) as it appeals perfectly to the market we want to attract this year.
All of our international acts put on amazing performances and are niche acts targeted at a clued up crowd.
Crazy P has a wicked new album out in September, so does Ugly Duckling, Pete Rock just released one and A Skillz has a stack load of new tracks out and so does Vandalism coming up.
We are not going for mass market and stack loads of kids, we are after a more mature audience which is what the Highlife brand is about and which many of our acts will attract.
They wont be everyone's cup of tea and that's fine, but if you want a festival of quality with good service, an intimate atmosphere, a very nice crowd, dont have to wait long for drinks or toilet stops and a campground where your tents wont get stolen, pissed on or broken into, then Highlife is where its at!
Our event is a boutique festival and we are after much smaller numbers than RnV and Coro Gold etc so this will be achievable for us.
Our line up is way better than the one we had last year and we sold out last year too!
Pretty confident this year will go well.
