Hi all you car people out there.

My head unit is occasionally disconnecting from the power. I'm guessing it's a fairly simple thing to fix by perhaps cleaning the contacts? Sometimes when I put it on it doesnt turn on, and sometimes its turns off and on while I'm driving.

Can anyone give me some advise on what to do?

Thanks

Sounds like either a loose wire (quite dangerous) or something not quite right in your headunit.

Is your headunit after market? If so how long have you had it and did you install it yourself?

It's been working fine since I've had the car (about 9 months), then about 2 months ago it just intermittantly turned off and on. It's a Pioneer head unit, I did not install it, a professional did. Is it possible that the head unit is just not connecting properly to the stereo?

I believe the stereo is about 3 years old.

Could be a large number of things.

My brothers car stereo keeps turning on and off at the moment as well, but that is his standard car stereo and we are about to rip it out and replace it.

Tis really hard to tell without having a look behind the unit...

Sorry.

Try asking on www.nzicemag.co.nz in the forums, those guys really know their stuff.

If it is a detachable face unit then the likely cause are the contacts. When it loses power are you losing the presets?

The presets remain as they were....so it must just mean that its the contacts?

Peroxide - it's the people on there that move fast...they reply quickly...

Most probably, you may find that the springs may have become tired and are not holding the face on very tight. If you start bending contacts be very careful, they snap pretty easy.

If that is not the cause then I would trace the power connections and make sure they are soldered or crimped properly... and check the earth to make sure that it has a good ground.

If all of that checks out and you still have a problem then chances are it is an internal fault in the unit.

Hey Man, If it was the flipdown face it would start back from where u left it when it clicks back in - They have a memory on them.

Check the power, remote and earth cable at the back. usually the red and black cable (the remote is possibly blue and on its own or connected to the power cable)

It will only be a remote wire if he has an amp, and it is the headunit turning off.

If it is not the front panel it could be the acc wire (the power wire that supplies power when you turn the key on, the other power wire is constant to keep settings).

TNO they are pretty quick and onto it on that site.

I consider myself a bit of a car stereo enthusiast, but some of them really push the envelope and make me look like someone who "would like one of those fangled cd thingys in my car one day".
