Connell got off pretty lightly in my opinion.

Are we strict enough on those who offend?

very lightly in my opinion too

As for harsher penalties - history suggests that no matter how harsh the penalty crime will still occur, we need to focus on making our scoiety such a place that people don't resort to many forms of crime and then focus on that which can never be eradicated - unfortunately a pipedream as we're far too selfish

Was he still a cop when it happened? The media refer to him as an ex-cop. Or did he lose his job over this?

From what I've read, he was an ex-cop when this occured.

The media like to throw the word 'cop' into their headlines just for hype.

Pretty pathetic how Peter's "apology" was taken into account when sentenced.

the fact he had been a policeman is quite relevant if you ask me - the guy ran off like a fucking coward and didn't face up to his responsibilites as a person let alone use the training he'd had to try and help those he'd hurt

I dont think he has got what would be called a light sentence when compared to other similar cases that ive heard of.

The fact is some peoples (especially the victims) perception of justice/revenge is a bit different to others.

I wonder if the guy claimed to be alcoholic/ psychological issues from being a cop (most ex cops i know drink a lot).

still, people can usually pay reparations more easily if they remain in the community - even on home detention - than if they spend a long period in prison

here $29,000 was ordered

Not if we harvested their organs while in prison and sold them on the open market.

Really? He was sentenced to 21 years - pretty solid in my book. And the old rule about serving two-thirds has been removed. And Corrections are clearly considering using a pretty rare application to keep him in beyond that.
(Although 2/3rds should see him through to year after next?)

I fail to see how that case is an example of a pathetic justice system?

Because in this case Parliament should IMMEDIATELY pass an Act requiring him be imprisoned for the term of his natural life
