Yeah, the quietest one so far. Sorry for all the folks who didn't know it was pushed foward a week, and for the lateness of the flyers (thursday...). One of the many nightmares of trying to push techno when you'd rather be getting on with the other things in your life is the fact that techno bods tend to be very tempoary

And sorry for taking so long to realise that it was the monitor speaker that was really harsh, not the main PA - sound guys were there till 9 still trying to figure a few probs in the system, so there was no offical soundcheck!!

Was all sounding good but... And it was my first time down at the basement, I really like the layout of the place.

Yeah I had to depart also, but glad I went. Small crew early on, did it get busier? Wicked vibe none the less and Really looking forward to the next one now.

I saw the middle section of the gig 12-3 and really enjoyed all of them, altho esp mention for Miles!
Great music but didn't really have a party feeling I guess would be my commecnt for the night. Hey guys have fun ! enjoy yerselfs! tho a bigger crowd would help...

i agree peat. it didnt help not having the flyers out till mid last week (no point in advertising when its left so late). last minute mad panic i expect. 'Orginize' is the key word here bamboo. i enjoyed miles's set aswell. some good action. i would like to see him get more of the premo time slots. i dont know why he doesnt get them but i hope its not because hes not offered them...
i figure as there is so much of the 'look at the bright side', positive type of attitudes posted here that a little critisism should balance out the form.
hardsoul has been fun and its all i realy go out in town for, i dont want it to end because of poor orginizing. galatos it a good place for it also, although the bar staff were very rude last saturday. they were losing money on the bar and at the end of the day its booze they are there to sell. supporting local techno is secondary to them, thats up to us, the punters. they will pull the plug unless the punters come, and the punters cant come unless they know about it (hardsoul).
my respect to crucial for providing the platform, as i said i want it to keep going.

Is it partly cos people that are into techno are more likely to be at home reading a book than out caning it?

My theory as a promoter, is that in the current social climate the music at a party is almost irrelevant in terms of attracting punters to a gig. Imo, people go out first and foremost because they want to PARTY, and socialise... so you have to sell a gig firstly as a party that will be fun, regardless of how good the music is (preferably with a male/female ratio that isn't massively unbalanced in favour of the blokes, which is hard given that blokes seem to be more passionate about music than women, generally speaking of course).

(Now you can say that you don't want 'that' sort of person at your gigs anyway, but the fact is, if you don't try and attract new people to techno then it will remain a ghetto for the faithful for all eternity...)

I tried to convince some of my friends (3 guys) to come to this party last time, and they didnt really enjoy it cuz they couldnt dance all night with all blokes on dancefloor. There were just a few girl that night. They werent there for the music of course and they didnt enjoy themselves cuz there were no chicks. So snitch, what you said were so true, but how will you attract new people to techno? or maybe not techno, just to this party? does it need to go more commercial? sigh.... ;(

There's plenty of folks into techno out there, I think it has something to do with the bredth of the style compared to other dance musics...
Not more commercial, even tho most of the AK djs are all quite underground in their selections, that's fine as it reflects the big guys overseas (seeing what people buy here is very similar to what DJs like Claude Young, Mills, Hawtin, Cox, Carola etc. play) so the music is right, as is the mixing...
OK... we may have some news on a NYE event, very undergroung, not a invite only thing at all (anyone welcome), but the word needs to be kept quiet. Let me know if you're keen, awesome venue (never been used before), nothing is locked down yet, but we're gauging reactions from the scene if they'll actually get off their buts for once

Like I said, I don't think the music or djs need to change (in terms of being more commercial) one little bit - the quality of either is not the issue at all.
(I think it is important to have a warmup dj that knows how to set a good 'feel-good' sort of vibe though, as people are much more open to being challenged if you warm them up slowly - tease them - first).
Basically it comes down to marketing/ promoting I'm afraid - and the stakes have been raised significantly in the last few years compared to what it was like through the majority of the 90's.
You want anyone_ who might be even a little bit interested in the gig to know about it, you want them to know at least 2 weeks in advance (more if possible), and you want to impress them first and foremost with how much fun it's going to be - not how good the music's going to be... You have to be a little deceitful and act as though the music's secondary to the good times! (If you want to pick up all the more open-minded strays in a bid to expand the scene that is)

yep, i hear most of what your saying. i would much rather be at home reading than go out every weekend. town is not very nice at the best of times. i do go out though to support the music i like, but mostly because its my friends who are playing it. i dont go there though to find woman or get canned, i go because its a rare chance to sample the music i like over a loud system. it is nice to have a good balanced mix of people and i agree that a good warm up dj is essential in oeder to set the mood and make people feel relaxed enough to stay there. people are so flighty ands its almost as hard keeping them there than it is getting them there. hard and banging is not realy that comforting staight off the bat. if that feel is to contrasting to what ppl feel like when they walk in then they will leave. start it off deep and techy and build it up later.

this NYE eve thing sounds interesting. ill be ak will probebly be into it. a litte more info though i will nead befor my plans gell. send me an email.

don't get too concerned about the marketing/promo guys - this was a one off stuff up which was out of bamboo's hands, and considering how late the flyers went out, I think the turnout was OK

I'm sure bamboo will come back firing for the next one!

Crucial has an invite only last year (for legal reasons I believe) which was a lot of fun, but more importantly really seemed to bring folks together.
Blew up my speakers that night HAHA but was well worth it!! Got some new ones now - NO you cant borrow them Matt!! :+)

its is indeed difficult to get anyy party off the ground and techno is regarded by most peeps as serious music not take 3 pills and go off type of stuff,

anyhow big ups fer doing tho and eventually you will be pakking the place weekly, if great music is the goal, a nice atmos is fine but wif crap choons its a waste of money methinx

i dont think though that most ppl regard techno as anything more than the mainstream enterpritation of hard and banging electronica. to have the average punter regard it as a serious genre then at least some of our problems could be solved. ppl find it hard to understand it because it is not all that accessible. and sadly to some extent techno is more suited to this type of (underground) enviroment. it would cease to be what it is if it became mainsteam.

Techno people do know about things useually. The DJs are the worst, they will not, absolutly NOT go to a gig unless they or their mates are playing! So unless all the DJs want to show support and bring their friends etc. the scene will have to suffer without a core. This also means that big tunes will not get recognised, the techno following will not be as educated as say in D&B, and everything suffers a little. Drop The Bells in any other city and it blows the roof off, drop Step To Enchantment and the crowd is in the palm of your hand... Auckland just seem to boogie on no matter what!!! Even trippleups with an elbow scratch of Knights of the Jaguar on 3 decks and a cutless in your teeth only gets a few smiles

Great to see the techno hardcore at HS4, respect - and get youself along to the next one if you missed out/didn't know/too slack.

The tracklisting is a fraction off near the end - sorry. Anyone wanting to know what the hell I was doing let me know. I thought I had it all written down correctly, but the list I wrote was the pile at the end, and I had a extra record in the stack, and I since I hate doing mixs I supose I just forgot and put it down anyhow. Oh well.

Oh, there's some other mixes of that tune, as well as a really cool lofi indie number too which I played last at analog if anyone stuck around to check my rock dj skills ')

The original is nice, different, bass is very different, tho more luch and chord driven. There's 2 dubs (jwink and main with no vox)... and I think there's another version floating around but can't remember who. Check Alaxander Kowalski's lp out if you get the chance... excellent german styles

DJing on stage to a packed floor, and looking down in the midst of the crowd and seeing a good friend naked shaking ALL of what his mamma gave him to your music... maybe that's the ultimate compliment in some circles, but it can definatly put you off stride!!
