What is it these days? I keep hearing pansy-ass lightweight tunes with a few buzzing noises in them which come with the comment 'oh, man, that's some dark, nasty techno' etc.

Well Get real and listen to this.

Name the tune please, youtube is blocked at work...

If anyone comes up to me one more time and tells me how 'dirty' their limp electro is, they should back the truck up and plug 4 or 5 of these bad boys into their mix chain to even come close to Mills:

Millsart "Step to Enchantment (Stringent)" (1993)

Aka early Jeff Mills and metalic badness. I heard him play this live at a Hardware party at Victoria Docklands, Melb in about 2001 to 5000 people. One of the best moments I've ever experienced at a dance party!

Oh.. by the way, I was playing this record when I met Matt Drake and Miles. It was at a party at Normanby Road back in the day. I think Miles was impressed that a 'house' dj would have be in possession of two copies of it. Cool

It was a special moment.

..which, as good as it is, is nothing but a smattering of minimal by comparison. Wink

funnily enough, rob, i was listening to a bit of dave clarke & jeff mills the other day.. i think that as time has gone by and the bpm has dropped to a sustainable 127ish, you forget how hard it once was.

but dear god i loved it! Music Music

thanks for chucking it up! Very Happy

This Music

Pffft heylady, tis all very easy to constantly look back to the halcyon days Razz the classics are just that, classics, and we cherish them as such. But seriously, there is so much good music coming out now (once you sort the wheat from the chaff) that despite the odd trip down Sentimental Lane, Nostalgiaville, theres no need to disparage the new stuff Froggy
[quote]
Quite the trend to champion at least a couple of yesteryears well-dug classics per set these days though. More say, Paperclip People than a Jeff Mills tune because of that huge drop in tempo.

Shame - Ben Sims and the Terminal M stuff still sound great on their own but rubbish at -3. Think they'll be staying on the shelf for another 5 years Smile

It always has been in reality - from Hawtin to Tenaglia to Carter and Francois K - the best always seem to do it as standard.

Yep tis true - been done for donkeys.

Just doesn't sound too flash up against today's pace of hard techno dropping a purpose maker tune unless there's some re-editing involved - more the point I was lamenting.

Definitely!
Klock in particular is firing, still really enjoying his album. Some of his stuff and Dettmann's sounds really good slowed down. Not to mention the shed 'EQD' records, so heavy.

Also been enjoying the Donato Dozzy/Giorgio Gigli kind of stuff lately - the Gigli track with Cio D'or that came out recently is awesome.

RA has a feature (plus mix) on some of this stuff if anyone's interested;

err.. i dont constantly look back and i wasnt disparaging the new stuff.. you should know me well enough by now to know how much i adore music, in all its shapes and forms. and, tbh, the beats that i have been laying my hands on lately are enough to make you jizz in your pants.

it is nice to hear some of the older stuff occasionally. besides, at my age if i want to take a listen to something i was out stomping to 14 or so years ago, its my damn prerogative. so there, you young whipper snapper! Razz

btw, wasnt it me that put you onto that len faki tune..? Froggy

No Rolling Eyes (twas McBean I think) Froggy

Besides, Im just winding you up heylady... I know your ears probably aren't what they used to be and so the classic tunes are the ones that stick because you can piece together from memory the parts of the track that you can't actually hear any more unlike the guesswork involved in listening to teh new stuff Froggy

And all that is despite the fact that I don't mind chucking classics through sets either, magic tunes new and old get regularly cycled through on The Morning After Wink

Sandwell district, berghain, etc. all hot.

Random act of kindness day is coming soon. September 19. After some thought, I've decided to dedicate it to the techno lovers.

www.audion.me is all I'll say Auckland.

i never would have guessed you were taking the piss. Razz

i think its prudent to note that my ears are fine, thank you very much. i have the superior genes that mean i still have great hearing, which is why when you are a burnt out, washed up wanna-be dj i will still be repping with my brand of dirty tech. Pink Winky

you, however, will be relying on that cane to be more than just a fashion accessory, and will probably have a hard time distinguishing the difference between electro and house. its all 4 four, innit? Froggy

thanks to this thread i got all inspired last night and found 8 dirty new tech tunes. admittedly, that are no where near as hard as as in the vid, but they still hold true to that filthy minimal sound we all know and love.

once again, biggup robw! Music

Ah my epic double backhanded wind up has fallen on your old deaf ears Sad

As for all that other stuff you said, you're probably right. I'm already half way to that old codger yelling at kids on his lawn, throwing his cane at the TV, washing his slippers in the dishwasher, sleeping through Joris Voorn and Nic Fanciulli *sigh* Crying or Very sad

I has some epic dirty floor filling tech house filth business that is *exactly* up your alley by the way. And nobody else has it coz the chicky who produced it is from Geelong and shes a friend of a friend, seen? Hmmm, should I send you a taster? Froggy

did you get my email? did you check those tunes? are you having techno kittens as i type this?

and dont stress too much, when you get all old and annoying ill still let you come to my gigs and whittle animals in the corner. ill even provide you with a knee rug and you can yell at anyone you like. Cool

as for missing voorn, i think we will let that one go, just dont let it happen again.. or next time you might have to *gasp* pay to go in. Razz

ps, my old deaf ears suffer from selective hearing.. which is why i hate electro. Wink

Redeemed imo Very Happy

Sweet, Ive got got my whittling tools and plenty of balsa wood. Just keep the noise down so people can hear me shout at them about how we used to do things differently back in my day. Damn kids with their pseudo techno music Mad

Nope, haven't checked my mails yet, will do when I get to the office! Will try upload some of this tech house business for ya too Wink

A lot of the more recent harder stuff doesn't necessarily have the higher bpms of 90s techno. Which is good for me cause when the bpms start getting up there I generally kind of lose interest and would rather listen to dnb or dubstep at those tempos.

I'm mostly liking slower stuff w/ heavy or weird sounds, stuff that is closer to minimal but avoids some of the aspects of minimal house and techno that have become cliched. I guess this speedy j remix is a good example of the kind of thing I mean.
