I've been given a Half Marathon ticket. 31st October.

This year I haven't been as active as I was last year (which upsets me somewhat) and lately I've only been doing about 6km. I can probably run 10km easy enough but I'm not as fit as I was. The Half marathon is 21km.

Do you think I have enough time to train up? Any tips?

I'm mostly concerned about my body not taking the impact well rather than the fitness aspect tbh, when I used to do 12 or 14km my knee or hip would always be a little bit grumbly the next day.

ZOMBIE HALF THREAD! Smiley, if you're still checking, are you still planning to run?

hold crap its ruther4d...in sports no less Santa <3

Smiley...I'll prob just come across as a jaded but I'll try anyway, your hips and knees are sending you a message. I sure wish I had quit road running at 24 and not ~32. I didnt and I did so much permanent damage to my lower back that now I cant do things like play touch or indoor cricket...and that really pisses me off

having said that...Completing something like a half marathon is a worthy goal, so IF YOU MUST then do absolutely everything you can to protect and recover your body from all that jarring.... 40-something Smiley willl thank 20-something Smiley later. probably

I just wanted to see what other biggies were going the 21.1. I'm running in November, but was having some little hip and knee grumbles after my long runs. I was going to say to Smiley that doing a couple of decent hip strengthening workouts each week helps with both hip and knee pain.

I'm doing the full marathon - eek! Definitely need to ramp my training up ALOT in the next 3 months.

I'm doing the Taupo half this Sunday so it will give me agood gauge of how I'm sitting currently.

Thanks Q! Smile

A bit worried about doing the full.......my life seems to be consumed by bootcamp, pilates and running of late and don't think that will change until after the race. I know how much slacking off I can get away with for a half now but this needs some serious investment for me. I'm not the fasted runner at all! But really looking forward to making it over the finish line (or hobbling!). I just hope i don't injure myself before then.

Good luck Ruther4D - you'll do great. I always find you surprise yourself with how well you do.

if you really want to focus on running laina...just run, bootcamp and pilates won't help your running too much...

It's always good to cross train codpiece.. surely you know that?
Core strength will help Laina with her running so much.

I have a half in 8 weeks, yikes..haven't really been training like I should be.

you'll get better for an event by training specifically for that event. ie to get fitter for running, you run.

in triathlon, lots of running lessens explosiveness on the bike (to the extent some pros hate walking anywhere), and weakens your swim (unless you need to lose weight to swim faster).

whilst a bit of core work is fine, strength training apparently has dubious benefits for any endurance activity - aside from possibly injury reduction.

but meh, not many people actually want a pure runners physique do they? heh

Im doing the half marathon in October. Started training, then failed due to injury and sickness. Going to get back into it after this week as its huge storms.

I've only managed around 5kms so far, so hopefully 10 weeks is a long enough training programme to get up to half marathon length!

I've seen some (girly) training programs that are just 8 weeks too, so 10 should be plenty to build up the distance, Just. Are you running to finish, or do you have a time goal in mind?

I've just seen the beginners half marathon training schedule that I will start tonight for 10 weeks. Eeek, looks hardcore with 5 runs a week. Plus I have to fit in 2 pump classes and a yoga and maybe a spin if I can manage it.

Looking to finish mainly, but would like to do 2 hours or under. I think that might be a dream though.
