Greens urge Labour to back four weeks holiday

The Green Party today reiterated its support for four weeks holiday for all workers and challenged the Labour Party to stick to its own policy and principles and do the same.

"The Greens campaigned hard throughout the election on our policy of four weeks annual leave for all workers and we are delighted that Matt Robson's private member's bill which seeks to do this has been drawn from the ballot," said Green Employment Spokesperson Sue Bradford.

Wouldn't it be great to have 4wks leave a year gauranteed?

It would probably even create some jobs. While people are away on leave someone has to fill in for them - hence more jobs.

my employer just changed their policy to provide 4 weeks holiday to all employee's, with people who have been there longer then get more...

Who can argue with 4 weeks holiday if your an employee, i would like to hear some employers coments though.

I listened to most of the parties spiels and written stuff and don't remember this being mentioned, anyone else?

Don't kid yourself guys 1 week more on holiday = 1 week less of pay, the loss just gets spread out over the whole year so you don't notice...

That depends on your contract. Many people, particularly ones with 3 weeks holidays, are paid per hour so it would make a difference. At the moment heaps of higher earning people get 4 weeks. Most low earning people only get 3. I would ask for and expect 4 weeks in any job now. I don;t think it would cost employers that much all up. The employers federation (or whatever they're called) were clutching at straws in trying to say how bad it would be on TV last night. Tried to claim everyone would want an extra week if it went up to 4, not just those with 3.

Everyone one would want an extra week wouldn't they??

I'm sure the guys in this company who get 4 weeks after 7 years service will feel ripped off if everyone gets 4 weeks.


btw, I'm not saying more holidays is a bad thing, in fact i think it's a good thing, but it will cost us. No doubt about that...

trapper: that was a little prob around here, so they just said to everyone who already had 4 weeks, they get an extra week this year (plus the 4 they already got).

and besides, i'd rather pay and get my 4 weeks, thanks.

Im on salary so I hope they do put it thru.

i generally take 6 weeks a year off ( 3 paid, 3 unpaid) wouldnt have it any other way!

The Greens are obviously still under the mistaken guise that Labour still actually care about workers. Hahahahahahaha silly Greens, you will never get more holidays from a centre right govt (yes I do mean CENTRE RIGHT).

Some people keep missing the fact that trapper is trying to say and that is that it will still cost the company, and it will have to pay for it somehow.

It also means that there will be more likelyhood of two or more people being away at one time. In most cases the company wont be able to replace the worker, the other workers just have to do more putting more strain on them. Get a few people away at the same time and the strain gets worse.

Everyone needs a time to recharge and rest, and there is ussually an increase in overall productivity when job stress is kept at the right level. Some people seem to take thier holidays on the job and dont need more holidays, while others work hard and perhaps wouldnt get so burnt out if they had more holidays and had time to relax.

Personally i am in favor of longer holidays (i guess everyone who works for someone is) but it will have a cost, one that could effect small to medium sized companies badly.

With the extra week I would expect companies would be a bit harsher on when you could take them. eg not all at xmas and new years when others are away.
