Anyone else obsessed with these beautiful and deadly beasts of the ocean?

I love the Great White Death, so elegant and ruthless, thetes some great documentaries on SKY about them Smile

They can be pretty antisocial though! Check out this report on an attack that happened in 1959 off California

WARNING--Might make it hard to get back into the water next summer/especially for all you wax_heads out there

It was about 5.30 on the afternoon of August 24 when 18 year old Albert Kogler and his new Girlfriend Shirely O'Neill decided to take another quick swim before returning home for the day

Shirley O'Neils account taken by the LAPD on the beach 30 minutes after the incident

"We had been in the water for 15 minutes and we had gone out about 30 metres from the shore when Albert said to me "lets stop here, it'll be over our heads soon"

"We stood neck deep talking and cuddling and after a few minutes decided to return to shore. I turned to the shore and was about to start swimming when I heard Albert scream. I turned towards him and I saw this great big fish hitting the surface of the water......... like it had dove from a great height."

"There was a real seething in the water and the tail of the big fish was thrashing about and causing a huge commotion and I knew he was fighting with this fish which must have been very big. It was then he yelled out "Its a shark! Get out of here!"

"I did a few strokes towards shore and then thought "I cant leave him here" so I turned back and swam towards the commotion in the water. He was screaming like he was in great pain and for a moment I saw the great beasts jaw biting down on his chest, it opened up wide and I thought it was going to let him got but suddenly the jaw clamping down even harder with a loud snap, it had just been getting a better grip. There was blood everywhere and poor Albert was howling even louder, it was an awful sound but what was worse was I could literally hear the feeding sounds of the shark eating him alive."

"Through the froth of blood a hand appeared and I grabbed and started to try and pull him away but as his arm was almost detached from his body I used it to get closer to the battling shark and Albert to put my arm around Alberts body and literally had a tug of war with the shark which was showing no interest in me but just continuing to bite down and rip at his chest"

"Finally the shark let go and I started towards shore with the bloody mess that was my boyfriend"

With a superhuman effort and unbelievable bravery she struggled for 20 minutes to drag him the 30 metres to the shore as the shark attacked and ripped at Alberts body

There were many people on the beach that day who witnessed the attack, but none were brave enough to enter the fray until Shirley had got to knee deep water

They lay Albert down on the sand and surveyed his injuries , one leg gone to the thigh, the other a mess of strips of flesh and muscle hanging like old rags and blood pouring onto the sand. One arm intact and the other almost chewed off near the shoulder but the worst part was his chest, the shark had bitten poor Albert nearly in half, his whole bottom torso was missing and bite marks in the form of clean and jagged lacerations were visible on his face, neck and shoulders......all bleeding profusely

Albert died on the beach and President Kennedy awarded Shirley the young American peoples medal of valour for acts of extreme bravery

At the autopsy medical examiners confirmed the attacker as Carcharodon carcharias............a Great White Shark measuring at least 4.5 metres long

True story

have fun in the water kids
[quote]
4.5 metres is an adolescent. It will grow a lot bigger before its time is up

Oh no! I'm going to have nightmares..... Fishy

There may be young children permanently traumatised because of that. Or older children too.

I think I was about 6 when I snuck a look at "jaws" and I wouldn't go in a pool by myself for years after that let alone the sea. This would not be a good doco for me!

Sharks are pretty scary but how can you fault them for trying to feed themselves? Shame we seem to get in the way!
[quote]
I love sharks!

they are great with tartare sauce and chips.
[quote]
Ha same with me I managed to get my hands on a copy when I was like seven, never went in a pool or ocean for ages
[quote]
the great white would have to be one of the most beautiful animals on the planet....

there was a programme on sky a couple of months ago about these maniacs who had a theory that not just the south african great whites would jump out of the water.

to test this they had a hollywood special effects studio make them a bunch of seals and towed them from behind the boat with cameras above and below the water......

one shot from australia (where the great whites are the biggest) showed what looked like a bus flying through the water and then propelled itself more than 6 feet above the surface of the water ........ the shark was nearly 6m long and was one of the most impressive things i have seen.....

stupidist award went to the dumass's that wanted to see how the sharks intereacted..... they made a wood cutout of a great white shark with its jaws wide open as if it was about to attack..... then went diving with the great whites......... hid on the bottom and as a shark swam by the would jump up and hold the cutout up in front of it...... in order to gauge its reaction....... most of them turned away...... but one big fucker decided to just chomp straight through the cutout.........

needless to say the guy holding it shit himself and was still shaking when he got out of the water.........
[quote]
Yeah i love sharks to...i have probably watched all the docos on sky that have ever been shown.
[quote]
Fishy

The best shark doco was about those ones in Sth Afr who jump out of the water to catch seals n stuff.

In December there was a 3 metre (or maybe it was 5) female white spotted a few times at Goat Island. They said it was probably pregnant & heading down to AKL waters which is why it was in so close to shore.

Needless to say, DD did not go to Goat Island until January & she had buggered off. But there were hardly any fish to snorkel with. me thinks the bloody shark ate them all Mad
[quote]
Yeah my old flatmate put a 1 foot Great White in the sink for me one morning.. but I'm kinda non reactive till I have a cup of coffee so I just sorta thought... "Shark in the sink.. mmm.. ok", and put the jug on.

Theres always monster Great Whites just off shore Smile

Guess a matter of opinion. Dolphins are beautiful for me.

Sharks are very effective and powerful killing machines.

Don't really find that 'beautiful' as such Confused
[quote]
Well........ many sharks are mere scavengers

Its only really The Great White, the Tiger Shark, the Bull?Zambesi shark and maybe the Mako that I really like

(all the man-eaters funnily enough)

Great White----Beautiful

Tiger Shark----Elegant

Bull Shark----Vicious bastard

I believe sharks are responsible for many "deaths by drowning" where the body is never found, the dead dont talk after all............. and with the bigger sharks often its just *SNAP* ---and gone

Some of the shipwreck stories I have read would make your hair stand on end, theres something about being eaten alive by a entity from the depths which chills you like a childs scary monster story

[quote]
One of the coolest sharks is the Whale Shark.

You can snorkel or dive with them off Western Australia.

They don't hurt people - they eat plankton n stuff & swim along with

Me thinks they are very beautiful.

Oh yeah ....... they are massive too - can grow to around 45 feet in length - nearly 14 metres long.

My personal favourites are lobsters.

They are interestingly bumpy with spikey bits, have foul tempers until you get to them, go an attractive orange when bolied alive and taste nice cold in healthy salads.

After that I now wish death to each and every single one of them

Sorry, hate them with a passion but didn't mean to kill the thread!
[quote]
Yes, yes, sharks are fucken wonderful and terrifying at the same time.

BUT aren't we all just a little too freaked out by them?

After all, we think nothing of jumping inside our pet great steel shark and encouraging it to 'swim' at 100kmph a matter of centimetres from the oncoming sharks swimming toward us at the same speed....

And when they bite (as they so often do) the resulting injuries are in no way less painful or horrifying than their biological counterparts!

Daaaa d Daaaaa d Da d Da d D d D d.... CRASH! Fishy

is this true?

Another one bites the dust-a

Shark attack in West Australia, an surfer is eaten alive by two sharks..........one of them a 5m monster

TAKEN FROM SITE........An eye witnesses account

"Everyone was shouting: 'come on, swim mate'," he said. "It all happened so quickly.

"One second we were sitting out there waiting for a wave . . . but the next second there were these two huge sharks eating him and we really didn't get much time to think. It was a huge shark."

(whoooo "two huge sharks eating him") Shocked

While the species of shark involved has not been conclusively identified, shark experts believe it was most likely a great white shark.

Aquarium of WA marine biologist Sasha Thompson said it was impossible to say what triggered the attack.

Hey Sasha.................Im thinking they were probably hungry?

THeres only a VERY small number of species of shark that will attack a human in the water, mostly the Great White, and the Tiger Shark, but a few others like the hammerhead have been known to have a go at surfers, divers and swimmers.

Stastically, your more likely to be struck by lightening than die due to a shark attack.

However, if your unlucky enough to get attacked, your basically fucked and all you can do is hope if eats you in one or two bites so its all over, instead of taking off a leg, leaving you screaming in the water for a minute or so then coming back for an arm, then some torso etc etc.

When we looked out, there was this guy getting eaten by this massive shark, and there was another shark circling around him," Cameron Rowe said.

An unnamed man told ABC radio: "It just looked like a normal shark that you see thrashing around but they are normally reef sharks. But these [two sharks] were just heaps bigger, then we saw blood coming up."

Other witnesses believe both sharks attacked. One of the sharks was estimated to be five metres long and the other three metres.

"This guy started shouting and I looked over and there was two sharks just like thrashing around," said a witness, Mitch Campbell.

"And then we saw a guy scrambling around and saw him clinging to the shark and stuff, trying to like whack it, and trying to get away, and then they just kept coming back for more."

The attack lasted for 45 seconds before the sharks disappeared and surfers paddled to his aid in neck-deep water. Mr Smith was dead before two teenage boys could haul him ashore.
[quote]
Attn Maestro if you are obsessed with great white sharks as I am then i suggest you source the article on them from national geographic magazine from a few months ago. it is a real eye-opener. they travel around with the guy who wrote the screenplay for JAWS and visit such places as Seal Island off the Capetown coast where the sharks truly do leap out of the water.. Cool

the truth about great white sharks is that there's not really much about them that they DO know for sure. for obvious reasons they are hard to track down individually. one thing i know is that i must have been eaten by one in a past life because im fully intrigued/obsessed/freaked out by the fuckers! Mr. Green
[quote]
Why do they keep eating Australians???

Are Aussies easy to catch or something????
