This from the zdnet forum tho...

For now. Both cell technologies are racing toward 3G, 3.5G in the next 5-10 years.
The path for CDMA: CDMA1x--> 1xEV-DO--> 1xEV-DV
The path for GSM: GSM-->GPRS-->EDGE-->WCDMA-->HSDPA
WCDMA will surpass 1xEV-DO, then 1xEV-DV will surpass WCDMA, and then HSDPA will surpass 1xEV-DV
HSDPA (3.5G) is expected to provide data rates up to 30 Mbps which is about 10 times of 1xEV-DV. It is true that CDMA has speed advantage in the near term. But both technologies will grow tremendously in the coming year. The world market shares for GSM is estmated at 80% while the CDMA is 20%. In US however, CDMA has much larger shares between Sprint and Verizon. That will gradually change when the GSM coverage and WCDMA catch up. In the long run the networks will become transparent to users. Global phones, which support both networks, will start showing up before long. So you can make calls from anywhere in the world.
Medium term overview of sorts
