No, not a Vodafone vs Telecom thread, but their separate implementations of these two technologies for mobile Internet access.

Who has used what, which do you find best?

Coverage?
Speed?
Reliability?
Which works best in low signal areas?

Not fussed about costs, this is simply on a technical level. Any constructive input appreciated..

Google is your best answer 'cause there arent many here that know enough bout it..

This from the zdnet forum tho...

For now. Both cell technologies are racing toward 3G, 3.5G in the next 5-10 years.

The path for CDMA: CDMA1x--> 1xEV-DO--> 1xEV-DV

The path for GSM: GSM-->GPRS-->EDGE-->WCDMA-->HSDPA

WCDMA will surpass 1xEV-DO, then 1xEV-DV will surpass WCDMA, and then HSDPA will surpass 1xEV-DV

HSDPA (3.5G) is expected to provide data rates up to 30 Mbps which is about 10 times of 1xEV-DV. It is true that CDMA has speed advantage in the near term. But both technologies will grow tremendously in the coming year. The world market shares for GSM is estmated at 80% while the CDMA is 20%. In US however, CDMA has much larger shares between Sprint and Verizon. That will gradually change when the GSM coverage and WCDMA catch up. In the long run the networks will become transparent to users. Global phones, which support both networks, will start showing up before long. So you can make calls from anywhere in the world.

Medium term overview of sorts

At the moment in NZ, CDMA has the capability of having the faster data speeds, but that depends on where you are, how much signal etc. GPRS is a bit slower and as with CDMA is still reliant on good signal strentgh etc.

Coverage, they're both fairly similar from what I've seen and experienced.

Reliability, again from past experience I've found the GPRS network to be a bit more stable... but both telcos still have work to do.

NZ is one of 3 countries in the world to bother with cdma (or thereabouts.)

Aussie has implemented 3G (at 4Billiion dollars, or thereabouts) and it IS a good service. When you can get it. At the moment it is plagued by faults and issues.

Stick with GSM/GPRS for now. there's a whole lotta teething problems ahead.

The thing with CDMA is that its been adopted by some of the biggest markets in the world (USA, OZ, China) and while people have seen it as the less dominant network its still having a HUGE impact on the way telcos are building their networks. GSM still has a MUCH larger R&D support system/infrasture though due to the amonut of networks using it.
