Whats a free download one these days?

Debian is probably the best.

Knoppix is wortha look as a cd bootable version - depends what you want to do - its a full linux desktop with heaps of different programs for you to try.

And a mate of mine runs knoppix.net... so... I could prolly find a local server for you... in fact... I prolly have a copy...

theres always good ol RedHat and Mandrake you can get those from NewZealand FTP's for free
