I am in need of one, as it's been 6 months or so and petrol aint lasting as long as it should.

What is done on a typical tune up?

How much should I be paying for it?

Is it worth trying to do it myself? And if so how long would it take a beginner such as myself?

Thanks people...

I though my car needed a tune too. they did a tune check and said it was fine... it's been two years since my last tune!!! so I don't know whether to believe them.

you don't drive a mitsi do you? they need tuning all the time.

You can get it done by a mechanic, or an auto electrician, usually costing 150 odd dollars

No, I have a Toyota...and the only reason I think it needs a tune up is because my tank is doing about 80km less!

I hate the saying 'tune up' Cars these days can't be 'tuned up' like the old carburetted cars from back in the day. All you can really do is get a full service including replacing all fluids and cleaning the fuel injectors etc, get them to check the timing as well, very quick and easy to do but requires a timing light and you need to be able to read the marks so best left to a mechanic, other things you can do is get the fuel filter replaced. Clogged injectors and fuel filter can result in poor fuel economy.

TheNormalOne, If you havn't had one done already I recommend getting a compression check and get the turbo checked out, not really to do with fuel economy but especially with a turbo car you need to know everything is as it should be, otherwise you could get stung big time but I suppose a replacment GT starlet turbo would cost bugger all.

Laughing Im saying you own a GT starlet and I'll put money on it, its had a hard time at some stage of its life and I'm not basing that all on asumption... Hearing about you needing a new hand brake cable says to me your hand brakes probably had a hard time somewhere in its life and 'those that do hand brakies thrash cars' especially since its a front wheel drive and theres no other way to get the back out Very Happy
