OK thinking caps on people......

Not u Danjah !!!!!!!

How do you distinguish between differnt types of music....eg, drum n Bass - Metallicca????

nah just j/k Im being serious!!! whats the secret to defining music genres???

I expect to come back from work and this post to be full of interesting theories on this oneSmile

Have a good day kids MWAHXXX
[quote]
P.s I really would like to know about this, I wasnt just taking the piss Smile
[quote]
I dunno - it's like distinguishinging between
different painting styles... they're just different??

I'm not so bad with genres these days, but
sub-genres confuse me.
[quote]
well... each genre has a 'sound'... or something. like an energy or vibe thingy.

*waves hands in air innefectually*
[quote]
buy two or three diff music mags, look at the
reviews section and after a while you'll get an
idea as to which styles gets slotted where.
[quote]
I used to hve my genres all up the fuck. I knew what I liked, jsut didn't know waht it was called - I am sure if Danjah reads this I am going to get absolutely SLAMMED, but who cares. I am only just now sorting out what sounds like waht, and still learning, but i'm only new to the scene, so I don't care if I come across as a bit green when it comes to generes. One day soon I will get an informed biggie to sit down with me so I can see if I really do have them sorted now or whether I am still completely useless at figures out my genres.
[quote]
screw Danjah... he only knows DnB, Jungle, and
Vengaboys!
[quote]
which he still thinks is breakbeat !!
[quote]
OH fark - Munkies gonna love this Smile

[quote]
go Dirty DC - I have a problem with Danjah's attitude that you have to have in depth knowledge of everything about a genre to appreciate the music, feel like you belong at the events etc and if you don't then you're an idiot. I totally disagree. I can appreciate music without knowing the in's and out's of it. Sure I think you can appreicate it MORE if you know more about it, but being a guru on the subject doesn;t mean you have any more of a right to go to events, appreciate the music and have a good time.
[quote]
dito heavenly i totally agree
[quote]
having said that of course I do want to learn more about different genres etc, becasue I think it makes the events more interesting adn you can get more involved in the music.
[quote]
well i go a bit by how it makes me feel.

house - funky and disco'y progression
trance - i wish i was running through that big paddock again
DnB - dark and dillusioned
Garage - step to it
hardhouse - makes me feel thumpy (?)
pop - someone give me a gun
[quote]
heavenly: Me too, I suppose. I'm learning things, but being interested in pretty much every genre makes it much slower eh!

I also find I'm often lacking in the musical knowledge to describe part of a track I think is really cool. Gradually picking up a few words, but it's a slow process. "oh, you know that bit, when that stuff happened - well that was really cool"

Broad genres aren't too bad:

Trance
Hard house
House
Breakz/breakbeat
Drum n Bass
Hip hop

- being the main ones I tend to think of, at least these days. Then as you hear different music styles within those genres, and perhaps overlapping genres, a new 'subgenre' label crops up. Takes you a while to get a feel for those, and I can never define them well in words.
[quote]
i agree wit baz and heavenly
[quote]
I admire your openmindedness Heavenly.
Unfortunately I am not the same. Give me
twisted K-hole percussive U.S house anyday.
It's what I know. The difference is that 3-4 years
ago I was heavily in to DnB and still appreciate it
with a moderate amount of fundamental
knowledge. Try to retain some understanding of
all styles of music as you go and at least you
wont be a shallow closed minded person.

we mock what we don't understand
[quote]
I don't agree, I don't mock things I don't understand for fear of being totally shot down but someone who does know what they're talking about ;P . Voice, where are you learning the stuff you are learning about diffrent genres? I am really keen to learn more but am unsure where to start.
[quote]
Fark well said Heavenly. Smile
[quote]
come in voice - where you getting your new found knowledge on generes??
[quote]
He's just a fountain of knowledge of every aspect of just about everything.
[quote]
i know - most of it's bullshit though j/k ;P
[quote]
admiration once again.
[quote]
HeHe Smile
[quote]
dirtyDC I like your style, I hope your the good because we all know who the evil is Smile
[quote]
heavenly. Start with what you know and like
now... and work your way back. History is the
best education
[quote]
I know but WHERE do I get my info, where, where, where!!!! Wink
[quote]
No, heavenly is right, most of it is bullshit. *grin* Well bullshit in the sense that most people just don't care! (and that's fine) I'm just interested in lots of stuff, that's all.

Anyway, I'm just picking things up from everywhere, going to lots of different events (i've done so many different events of different styles now), reading people's posts on Biggie, esp in the "genre-based" forums. Sometimes people post their favourite tracks, so if you grab the mp3s you can get a feel for the genres.

Buying/borrowing compilation/mix CDs in a particular genre is good too.

Sometimes I just guess from the name of a genre, what I think it should mean. That doesn't work too well, especially with something like 'progressive'. Works better with something like 'funky house' or 'deep house' or 'speed DnB'.

By the way, I forgot "Techno" on my genre list. It's so different than the other genres, yet so small in NZ. Or maybe it's too mainstream now?
[quote]
definately not mainstream. The other way I'd say
O.K O.K no need to worry about it too much
anyway. Just talk to people, listen to music &
soon enuf you'll know shitloads more than you
did.
[quote]
Fair call dirtyDC - sorry about that. Admittedly techno is one thing I am yet to get a good feel for, but it IS much different than the other genres I listed isn't it?

I also want to get into breakbeat more. I really enjoy both DnB and 2Step (2step being a subgenre of garage, which I usually view as a mix between breakbeat and house in many ways) so I'd like to get int some more breakz. Gotta find a good mix CD!
[quote]
But I;m interested in doing some reading on the different genres. I guess I can just look on the net, but I suppose it may not be a topic that people write about, seeing as it’s a aural thing. I guess there’s no theory on this type of stuff as anything goes.
[quote]
might start looking in the genre forums a little more, thanks guys Smile
[quote]
they all have similar elements in them. a lot of
trance has techno snare & hi-hat patterns in it
for eg.
you've got the principle there voice by the sound
of it. If you can work out what came first, then it's
not hard to figure out what styles came from
which.
[quote]
heavenly: It's hard to find /good/ stuff written on the net. I looked in the past for a while and gave up. They all seemed obsessed with talking about oldskool genres, e.g. happy hardcore, rather than defining/explaining modern genres.
[quote]
well they're just bastards then aren't they voice? I will have to gt my info from informed biggies then Smile
[quote]
Personally the only point I see in genres is as a description. It lets you know what type of music you are getting yourself in for, sub-genres just define this more. The other point about genres is that there is crossover between them anyway. This sort of stuff is more important for DJ's as the usually only play one style (not neccessary their choice but because that is what most events want). GG keeps me up to date with all the genres anyway. I just go and dance.
[quote]
*sigh* my god u people are sensitive!

"I have a problem with Danjah's attitude that you have to have in depth knowledge of everything about a genre to appreciate the music"

- NOPE, actually that aint my viewpoint, rather it being that a little bit of knowledge goes quite far, its pretty narrow minded to not know anything about the music u like, the sound, the style, production aspect blah blah it all matters, maybe to some people more than others, just really discourages me when people couldn't care less what they listen to as long as it sounds good when they've spent 70 bucks on a pill.

and i do pay attention to other music actually, get stuck on one genre and sooner or later u will be sick to death of it, i mean i can't listen to dnb all day with going nuts, so i cut it down with some vocal 2 step bizness, maybe some hip hop and some house classics oh and the almighty Lock Stock soundtrack! BOO! omg been rinsing this out all day Very Happy

DirtyDC: dnb has moved so far away from the dark dirty sound in the last few times its had to imagine that producers making those tech step anthems of 96 are currently making the most soulful funky shit out there! infact most of the big big anthems of last year were all vocal or funk driven ,and if you still think that the dnb sound is still based around who can make the most evil sound out there just go into any of your inner city cafes, the nu subtle breakz are going down very well with the cafe massif, plus marky and bruan gee absolutly tore it down last week Very Happy pure unadulterated funk NUFF SED
[quote]
anybody wanna do a massive mp3 swap one day maybe? over coffee maybe Smile hehe i got some mean dnb sets some def. VIP mixes that i know some people would love to get their grubby cheesy little fingers on *looks at gimpy* Very Happy

genres:
basically a combination of speed (bpm) and signature sounds/themes.

eg house 120-130 bpm, tends to have soul, disco, funk influences, does not have snare buildups. various subgenres eg deep house, tech house

trance 130 - 140 bpm, tends not to have soul, disco, funk elements, more "european" in style.
traditional sounds include 303 acidlines.
various subgenres eg acid trance, psy trance, hard trance, uplifting - epic trance

It all breaks down if you push it too far.

While they can be useful,
IMHO, only two genres are needed - "I like it" and "I don't like it". Dance music is too stratified these days.

[quote]
oh yeah - one of my favourite quotes:

"writing about music is like #@!!king about architecture"

Smile
[quote]
the link toasted put up is not bad, but genres are called slightly different things in different countries. Even so, I think the creator of this got a few things wrong, eg
calling Union Jack's "Red Herring" acid trance - when it's either psychedelic or the 'classic' trance sound for me.
Acid Trance would be something from the Stay Up Forever label perhaps. A lot darker and harder.
And Binary Finary's "1998" is 'progressive'?? Most prog heads would spit! What they've listed as "tech" trance would fit better.

Talking about genres is always gonna be hair-splitting, so

me shut up now

Smile

[quote]
ya even i know that 1998 aint prog! (top tune tho!)

still.. good place to learn that hardhouse is only a *tiny* part of the full spectrum..

whens the next heloid gig then Smile
[quote]
Danjah... too true. I am well impressed with the
funk and vocal aspect to DnB. Not to mention
the stripped back dubby feel of eg. Salmonella
Dub. Let's not forget that every genre has a
spectrum from cheesy lushness to dark &
industrial.
Well except Hardhouse!!

j/k
[quote]
Helix, i compleatly disagree with trance being 130-140 bpm, more like 140-160.....yeeeeeeeaaahhhhhh hehehe
[quote]
stoffa, true - it goes from
130 (proggy end) to 160 (hard/nrg trance)

toasted
heloid parties coming up soon, including a 3 zone OUTDOOR party
see www.heloid.godzone.net.nz for details

holy shitSmile

hahahahahahaha thanks guys!!!!!!
[quote]
BrowndogVery HappynB - dark and dillusioned
U need to listen to some more dnb man.....Marky, Goldie, Bukem, Roni Size - i wouldn't call them disillusioned.....in fact dnb is a very very complex form of music...lots of layers, beat patterns and changes. Speaking as someone who spins hardhouse, I don't find the same sort of complexity in HH, Trance maybe, but not HH.
Dajah: yes i do have grubby cheezey little fingers wot want more dnb..also....check out Lab4 for non-cheese...dark twisted HH.
