Garage Sales

So I've decided to have a garage sale this weekend ...

Anyone had one before and have any tips... I don't know how to price things I think they're worth loads but yeah...like heaps of perfect condition pumpkin patch baby clothes and a girl gourmet cup cake maker that's been used twice ... dvds... golf stuff.. hrmm.

I was thinking $5 for a DVD single disc $7 for a 2 disc DVD and $10 for a 3 or more disc dvd..obviously mint condition mostly never used... is that reasonable?

Clothing... $2 per item for the pumpkin patch stuff and then x2 for $1 for the other baby stuff which is all in perfect condition.

???

Be prepared, peeps come at the crack of dawn and start grabbing and shouting to get the best stuff! I would price the night before.

Did one for my boss a few years in Otara, was out of this world, slowed down bout 8am. I guess it depends where it is, but some peeps do this for a living and resell so get well orgainsed night before for sure.

I'm going to keep my garage closed until 7.30 when it starts.

I'm gonna set it up real nice and I only have really nice stuff I'm selling, and I've taken all the dvd discs out of the cases and will have the case of discs with me.. Have washed all the clothes so they're all fresh and clean and folded nicely.. . now I'm up to the pricing part which is tricky.

You could sell the pumpkin patch stuff for way more than that!

Why a garage sale and not TradeMe? I'd think you would get more $$ on TM?

Trademe has always irked me, I've always had to chase people up for payment and details etc.

Be prepared for people to show up 2 hours before you say you are going to start and try to carry off anything that isn't bolted down.

Yeah, would totally sell PP stuff on TM. At a garage sale I'd expect to pay $1-2 for some kids clothes regardless of brand. TM should net you more than that. $1 reserve it all, you're guaranteed to get way more for PP stuff, doesn't that shit sell for like $45 a piece new?

My goodness you are brave! Garage sales can be a nightmare. My parents had the odd one when I was a kid, and I have helped out quite a few mad friends who have had them over the years. Yes there will be yelling and shouting, and grabbing... You gotta wonder where some of these people come from!

But at least they are all over and done with in one day, and they do work for clearing out crap.

My advice would be to price things at slightly more than you hope to get for them, as people will definitely bargain. Make sure you are ready to sell from the moment you put out any advertisements. People will ignore any start time. Make sure you have plenty of change - like you can pretty much never have too much as you will be surprised how many people just take big notes to a garage sale. But most importantly would be having plenty of help. You need to make sure that every single entrance into your house has someone keeping an eye on it as a garage sale is the perfect opportunity for theives.

Good idea but I owe Trademe $15 for some fees from ages ago, so I can't use my account until I pay it and I dont want to pay it as I'm trying to make money not spend it.

Yeah I've got a big PI guy to "stand around" and guard the cupcake maker and golf stuff LOL and my mum is going to be there too and I'll be the guarding the money and dvd discs LOL.

I'm already regretting it, so hopefully that means it won't be as bad as I think it could be I can always tell everyone to fuck off and shut the garage doors if it gets too annoying.

If you say it starts at 8am, there will be people there from 7am knocking on your door even if your curtains are closed and all the lights are off.

Garage Sale-ers are pikey bargain hunting gypsy scavenging freaks, and/or people who own/run second hand clap trap junk stores or make their living on Trade Me...anything with a price, they'll want to pay half that price even if it's something they've wanted for years and is a bargain at the price it's listed at

DVDs, you're dreaming if you think anyone will pay $5 each disc, you'll sell maybe 5%-10% of them like that, the rest won't move other than someone saying "I'll give you X for the whole lot" (X being variable in relation to how many disc there is but more likely in the region of $2 a disc)

It is a good way to clear your crap and you will get money for it, but not as much as taking the time to do it on Tard Me, but I'm with you that that is a pain in the ass, on going lenghty hassle with getting money and posting stuff away whereas this will all be over and done with by 11am...though you'll still have a load of crap no one wanted

Not life size heh maybe like up to my knee or so so pretty big and he has the full outfit on which I don't think is removable. My daughter has a big shrek donkey too but I can't part with it it's too awesome to sell.

the chicken little is about the same size and says stuff and has cute green specs.

Use a sexy bum bag for the cash -don't forget to have a bit of change on you. Also why don't you research prices on TM then you'll have an idea what others are charging.
Also good idea on making sure doors and windows of the house are locked to prevent wanderers.

Definitely pikeys... Mark my words... No one! can pave a drive way better than pikeys, you just gotta supervise them so they don't roll in a bunch of caravans and a few horses when they're done and start squatting. Seriously I've seen them pave a driveway wile the car was still parked in it, just ended up with four little patches where the tyres met the ground. There was also the case las year where the arrived in anempty lo and had paved the whole thing and set up caravans before anyone realised what the hell was actualyl happening. By the time the cops arrived it was far too late.

haha it was great!! It was a little bit worrying at first because there was a crowd of people outside my garage at about 7 so I kinda freaked out.. but it was good I didn't sell that much stuff but made around $200 .. only thing all the ladies were arguing over was a little kids bike I was selling about 5 of them wanted it.. But everyone was really nice and I got to meet some hard case locals... only one creepy guy showed up asking if I sold "sexy movies" wtf ... but other than that it was good and I'm planning on having another one later in the year some of my family want to get in on it and sell some stuff at my next one... I totally recommend it quick way to make money.. Just be organised and price everything makes things go smooth

Did you sell your LOTR's dvds? if not what are they? (you said box set thingies)
