I had a screaming row with the cashier at my Mobil station this morning, seriously I was shouting in his face.. what happened was I paid for my petrol but pulled my cashflow card out of the machine too quick so no receipt came out…but the payment went through, I knew this because I went to try again and it declined as I’d put only $35 in that account and paid $20.00 so obviously if I tried to deduct the amount again it would decline. I knew straight away the guy started saying I was a liar about 10 times, which fired me up… So I brought up my bank statement on my phone to show him the payment had been deducted – the only way they would give me the petrol I paid for was if I completed a form that said “To pay for petrol” though I wrote all over it that I had paid and had proof – and would only pay if the money was refunded to my account”… clearly the hot builder guys in the Mobil station probably thought I was crazy but seriously .. WTF~ so for now until forever unless it is a dire emergency life or death I will never go to another Mobil station in my life.

Oh I've got a "debit" card so you have to "insert" it... I pulled it out before the receipt came out but it still deducted.

Chip card. No swipey on machines that support chip cards. Card gets stuck into machine and left there till end of transaction. Awfully slow over dialup. Do you people never set foot inside a fucking shop or restaurant or bar or something?

What are you saying? I just put my chip card in the machine, then take it out … the money deducted he said it didn’t and I didn’t pay and was lying.. I showed proof and they reluctantly gave me my petrol as I wasn’t going anywhere without it…

Yeah I paid and it shows clearly on my bank statement which I showed them .. why would the bank give me the money back which is what the cashier thought would happen because their eftpos didn’t give him a receipt. I was so irate as I don’t need to thieve petrol nor would I and to be told to my face I would.. not a good idea buddy. Not just that I dropped my bottle of Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue in my garage and it smashed so was not in the best mood anyway…

Sounds like operator error to me. Doubt it has much to do with pulling the card out. When I buy petrol I've already removed my card, then the guy asks me if I would like a receipt. Surely notification of successful transaction of funds would be independent of requiring the card still being in the machine. As it would not be an uncommon occurrence.

Because the gas was pre pay so I had to pay before they would give it to me.. so if I left I would have no gas.

For EFTPOS terminals, yeah, it's the most common way. What, you've never had to wait for the dairy narg to yell at his wife to get off the phone so your transaction goes through?

And for internet too, in a lot more places than you imagine. Edit: Mobil? Fuck no, every man and his dog rolls prepay these days. Bullshit. Wish they'd do a proper EFTPOS-at-pump setup again, and not one that breaks down most of the time like Mobil's old shit did.

Chip & Pin has actually been a step backwards for NZ consumers, since we've lived with universal EFTPOS for so damn long compared to advanced countries like the US and UK. All because of the speed thing, mostly. Even on broadband, it's still slower than conventional EFTPOS.

My new AirNZ OneSmart card is contactless too. Haven't seen too many retailers offering it yet, but haven't been looking really.

Interestingly, CBA (commonwealth bank of australia) now have an iPhone case you can buy for $50 which has NFC somehow, and a fancy new app to control it. Was thinking of giving it a go, but I already have PayPass on my card, so probably not much point.

Oh its just our PayWave (which is what they call it here) cards still have the chip in them because PayWave is only good for up to $100, and you can't PayWave at ATM's. So I was wondering what chipless card BF uses?

There was a big kerfuffle over the MasterCard Tap & Go shit at RWC - lots of concession stands didn't have EFTPOS machines, only Tap & Go, what with MasterCard being a major sponsor.

Tap and Go/Pay Wave is all of about 5 seconds faster than your average EFT-POS transaction anyways...did that mean they didn't accept VISA either, only MC?
