wicked. this will definately replace my hotmail account. the storage limit on hotmail makes it almost useless. You don't clear it for a couple of weeks and it gets full of spam crap and you can't receive any more messages

Will be a good way to keep people on google when longhorn is released with its built in search engine.

Everyone knows hotmail is shit, so MS is gonna be behind there of the google service is really good. Especially with no ads. And hopefully some decent spam protection.

no. they're just going to do a google themselves, they have the desktop market share.

What do you reckon the odds are on MS recieving a ruling in Europe stating they have to unbundle the search engine from the desktop? Given the current ruling on them unbundling the Media player ...which is of course wrapped up in appeals.

1GB per user?? How do they have enough storage for that?

They won't have enough storage for everyone to max out their 1GB. I think they will operate on the principle that the majority of users will not fill it up completely, much like a bank doesn't hold enough cash for everyone to suddenly decide to withdraw all their savings at once. They'll probably do stuff like send messages informing people that old content can be removed etc.

and the fact that it will take most ppl years to fill up with 1GB of email,whats that like....30,000 emails or something?

Google has massive arrays of machines in data centers around the world. They also cache every page that they have in their index. They have lots of storage available.

Like people have said, very few people will reach 1GB of email. If I used it, i'd probably not go over 10MB or so - I keep my email accounts pretty clean, deleting stuff I don't need any more. Even if I didn't, text compresses very easily. Attachments take up a bit of room, but if 1000 people have the same attachment (eg funny cartoons that get emailed around) they only have to store it once.

It seems even if you delete your mail, or close your account, your messages won't necessarily disappear from google's systems.....

Exactly. You can't complain about free stuff. If you want privacy etc just get a proper email account.

email isn't ever private, unless you encrypt it yourself (and who does?)...

but at least it's not persistent... on other free accounts, if you delete it, you at least know it's gone.. ie. it's not lying around

you won't know this on google, and lots of people will leave stuff lying around thinking they've deleted it

if you read the article as well, you'll see that google are thinking about matching your mail information to your search cookie (every search you make is stored by google, unless you delete your cookie).
